Education Week – 150 years of Education

Junior School Council Report

To celebrate Education Week this year and the theme of ‘150 years of Education’ Junior School Council planned a few events throughout the week to celebrate the history of Fitzroy Primary School. These included school yard games of yesteryear, an art competition depicting Fitzroy Primary in the 1850s and an interview with Vicky Henty who has taught at Fitzroy Primary the last twenty-nine years. Enjoy a report by JSC members Aya and Ilyas, our photos of the old times games, winners of the art competition and the interview with Vicki.

Education Week – Celebrating the history of Fitzroy Primary School.

On Wednesday 25 of May 2022 we (Junior School Council) and Robbie prepared a few different games like the classic hopscotch, quoits, knucklebones, elastics and hoops. All the kids had lots of fun teaching and discovering the games together.

Junior School Councillors Interviewed FPS staff member Vicki Henty as part of celebrating the history of FPS.

Report by Junior School Councillors Ilyas and Aya 5/6 C

As part of Education week events Abdul, Aya and I (Ilyas) interviewed the longest reigning teacher with an unbeaten year count of an insane 29 years at FPS, Vicki Henty! We asked Vicki seven questions to find out what she thought about FPS and the history of her time at FPS. Enjoy reading!

#1 What was the first job you had at the school?

Vicki: “Teaching 1/2 students as a classroom teacher”

#2 Was the school building the same at the time?

Vicki: “Similar, besides the playgrounds and the Napier St renovation, but yes, it was the same at the time.”

#3 Do you like the changes made at FPS?

Vicki: “Yes, I like the diversity and the changes made to the school itself. I like that there are more male teachers now and I like that there’s new young and older teachers.”

#4 What did you teach your students?

Vicki: “I remember I taught IT, we had an Apple 2E an ancient computer and there was only one of them and that’s how students learnt to type and publish stories.”

#5 When did you decide to start teaching Science?

Vicki: “In 2017, we needed a Science teacher and Julie (former principal) asked me, and I accepted.”

#6 What was the most marking memory in this School ?

Vicki: … “Um, the time I had to do the Flying Fox on camp because the kids were encouraging it and during the ride I flipped upside down.”

#7 Do you like the students here?

Vicki “Yes, because there are lots of different students originating from different places.”

Thank you Vicki for your amazing contributions to Fitzroy Primary school the last 29 years
