AFL Players 4 Climate Action

Collingwood AFLM player Jordan Roughead and Western Bulldogs AFLW Player Nell Morris-Dalton have recognised the risks to their health from heat stress and hardened playing surfaces caused by a hotter climate. Along with others, they decided to take action to motivate AFL supporters to tackle climate change in a more organised way.

They joined the AFL Players 4 Climate Action ( www.AFLP4CA.org.au), inaugurated in 2020by former North Melbourne player Jasper Pittard and Tom Campbell from St Kilda.

Jasper recalls that “ it was training in the bushfire smoke that had descended on Melbourne in 2019 and was affecting our breathing that stirred me into thinking more about climate change—those fires had devastated dairy farms, vineyards and even tropical rainforests … areas that had never burnt before…”

Now, in a ground-breaking shared event with the Australian Conservation Foundation Inner Melbourne Community group (ACFIM ), Jordan and Nell will share their stories about what drives them to advocate for stronger climate action at the Fitzroy Bowls Club on 12th May.

Jasper and Tom will also detail the practical climate action initiatives being rolled out by AFL clubs and other community teams and the need for even greater action.

Just as AFLP4CA grew out of awareness of the impact of more intense weather events on sportspeople, ACFIM also grew out of an alarmed awareness of global warming and its cumulative impacts on the liveability of cities and on the habitats of all species.

Supported by ACF, climate-alarmed volunteers in inner Melbourne joined together in 2017, helping the regeneration of native vegetation in collaboration with Melbourne Girls College and to press local MPs to strengthen national environment protection laws and to prioritise public investment in renewable energy.

While ACFIM volunteers may not be as skilled as AFL players at kicking goals….both groups share a commitment to call for powerful action to help out the air we breathe and to utilise our sunshine and wind to create the new jobs that also won’t damage Nature.

All are welcome on the 12th May, especially those who want to know more about global warming impacts and are thinking of doing something about it!
