Sport Report

Congratulations Mr. Fero-Kovassy!

On the weekend Mr. Fero-Kovassy competed in the Wilsons Prom 66km trail run. The weather was not on his side with some pretty wet and cold conditions, but he pulled through in style in 8 hours and 48 minutes. In particular we want to acknowledge the hours and hours of training that he did in the leadup to this race – well done!

Regional Finals for Senior Volleyball – Thursday 31st March

By Abbey Gao

Volleyball interschool sports competition is here! It’s felt like years since we travelled among stadiums to play interschool sports due to covid and lockdowns. Our volleyball team gladly made through to the second regional round and so we versed across 4 school teams within our pool at the reservoir volleyball stadium Id say we began with a rocky start being stunned by an opponent with a strong speedy serve, however as the sets went on our team started to communicate more and rallies started to play out. It was fun and ecstatic in the game of volleyball, being quick on the spot setting and spiking towards each other. Overall we placed 3rd  in our pool which wasn’t too bad, our teamwork improved and at the end of the had lots of fun together. Spontaneously Mr V then took us then to KFC (which our team voted on) for lunch. Where we shared the day with some yummy zinger burger, and wicked wings deal boxes. 😊

Regional Finals for Intermediate Tennis – Monday 4th April

By Sophie Watts

On a cloudy day up at Boroondara Tennis Centre our wonderful Year 9/10 tennis team competed for their shot at the state title. MGC’s tennis team consisted of Sophie Watts, Martina Phan, Imogen Scott-Young and Genevieve Chia. We played Lalor SC and Greensborough in our Pool. It was a breezy day with a bit of rain but positive attitudes within the players. The team gave it their all even though it was some tough competition. The singles matches didn’t go our way but Gen was able to pull through and get some points for the team with her wins! Doubles was a heap of fun and each pair succeeded to play good tennis and get some games for MGC. Overall, the girls didn’t manage to make it to finals, but it was still such an enjoyable day for all. Let’s hope for some gold next year! A big thanks to Mr. V for coaching with expertise.

Sports Captain Badge Ceremony – Monday 4th April

Finally, after a busy start to the year in Term 1 – the sport captains were finally able to come together to be presented with their badges. Miss. Robertson was kind enough to attend on short notice and present the badges to all 18 sport captains. The role of our captains is pivotal in delivering a successful program across the year over several events that include the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, Pedal Powered Cinema, Health and PE week and many more. Well done both middle school and senior sport captains, well deserved!!

Term 2 – Sport Reports

State Swimming Finals – Thursday 28th April

The culminating event for SSV swimming was held at MSAC once again. Out team of 14 strong swimmers competed for a shot at a podium finish in their respective individual and team relay events. It had been a long term with multiple injuries and students struck down with COVID, but we were able to do our best under the trying circumstances. Individual event swimmers Charli Campbell, Lucy Crouch, Chloe Crystal, Bridie Walsh and Zeina Abbass fought gallantly in their Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle events and came just outside the top 3. A great effort to be considered in the top 8 swimmers in the state for these events, nonetheless. Onto the relays now – we had 4 relays teams, 2 medleys and 2 freestyle relays. All swimmers swam great legs, but the competition was fierce, and we fell just outside the top 3 in 3 relays. However, the highlight came at the end when our 14 years freestyle relay came home strong and received a bronze medal. A solid effort by Lucy Crouch, Amelie Szoeke, Alyssa Blair and Erin Simoni. We will be back next year hungrier!

Term 2 Division Senior Sport – Thursday 5th May

Badminton

By Levina Goenawan

On May the 5th was the Districts Interschool Sport for Badminton. MGC had 3 pairs of social players and 1 competitive team. I was on the A Team along with 3 others (Bernice, Gyumin and Abbey). We competed against Uni High A and B team. Unfortunately, other schools didn't attend the day, so the day was overall relaxed. With a single and double game for each player against a team. So overall, individually we played against two Uni High teams. Because the day was pretty relaxed, and our team was winning (hooray for us!) We trained among ourselves in preparation for Regionals later in the year.

Netball

On a day where the weather turned it on for our netballers, we came out firing in the first game against Brunswick Secondary College. Winning in quite easy fashion. Unfortunately, one team pulled out and one umpire was struck down with COVID and we were left with only one to adjudicate both courts. Fortunately, our badge umpires Abi Marsland and Georgia Moulton + Lizzy McGarry stepped in to professionally umpire the other court. We would have been lost without them! Onto the next round of games – we played SEDA B in a great hit out. Our team ran over the top of them with an amazing team performance in what was our highlight for the day. The next game was against SEDA A - in what was the grand final for our students, with the winner going through to Regional level at the end. A solid first half, saw our team neck-and-neck with SEDA with some solid defensive plays and mid court dominance. Unfortunately, the last half did not go our way with the opposition shooters getting away from us in a physical battle and SEDA won their right to play at the next level. Great efforts by our team in Abi Forster, Charlotte Thondan, Jaime Smith, Georgia Moulton, Freya Trounce, Arabella Spina, Abi Marsland, Imogen Cain, Amelie Kamberis, Chloe Kamberis and Lizzy McGarry. A big thanks to Mrs. D for coaching with Niamh G for the day.

Year 7 Regional Finals for Tennis – Thursday 5th May

A nice day out for our tennis team and coaches who headed up the freeway to Boroondara Tennis Centre. Our team of 4 strong tennis players in Claudia Popovic, Maia Gurov, Kristina Bratkova and Ines Cooper were in for a good day and the weather was beautiful. The round robin competition was against Greenvale, Eltham HS and Sacre Heart Kyneton. Our team played some incredible singles matches in our pool and also doubles games when we teamed up. Fortunately, MGC won their way through to the final against Preston High School and this was undoubtedly our best tennis for the day, where MGC won Regional competition and will now play for the state title later in the year in Term 4. Well done to the team and our coaches Sophie Watts, Lucia Pegler and Selina Qureshi. And also a big thanks to Miss. Habashi for taking the students along for the day! This was MGC’s first regional win in 3 years!

Year 7 Regional Finals for Softball – Thursday 5th May

Another beautiful day out for our Year 7 Softballers who enjoyed their first opportunity at Regional level in Secondary Schooling. The teams that we played for the day were Diamond Valley, Mernda Central and Preston. Each game was played with great enthusiasm and excitement as reported by the coaches. MGC won the first 2 games with ease in solid team performances and this lead to our final game against Preston HS. Some highlights were Eve and Honey’s pinch hitting which helped scores several runs for the day. And Letty’s consistent pitching. The final game was a team effort and MGC managed to win the regional final against Preston HS and win their right to play off at the state titles later in the year. This was MGC’s first regional win in 3 years! Well done to our coaches Izabela Ignjic, Lucy Crouch and Alice Kaye who scored all games and provided help wherever possible. And to Miss. Cash for leading our team of Julianna Krasnoff, Eve Fumberger, Elise Ho, Letty Lema-Yunghanns, Emily Theodossiou, Honey Eldred, Lola Croaker and Ivy Reeman

House Athletics – Friday 6th May at Box Hill Atheltic Club

The widely anticipated Athletics Carnival finally was able to be ran for the first time since 2019. No amount of bad forecasts and bus strikes could stop our school from putting on a wonderful day by all who attended. On a chilly morning our students travelled out to Box Hill and for our Year 7, 8 & 9’s – it was their first Athletics Carnival in Secondary Schooling. The nerves did not deter any student and participation across all the events was consistent. The sun came out and so did some fantastic sprints, long distance running, jumps and throws. Records were broken and the excitement was back for our next whole school event on the calendar. Noncompeting students were able to enjoy novelty activities as well with the longest footy kick, tough Mudder obstacle course, sack race and tug of war being ran by the sport captains and extra volunteers in the background. Mr. Vance and his team supplied a delicious cooked BBQ that was enjoyed by many and the famous pedal powered smoothies made a return to our wonderful event. Mrs. Busetti and the art captains ran the face painting once more which was a hit. Well done to the Year 12’s for beating Mr. Monaghan, Miss. Wong, Miss Nicholl’s and Mr. Anderson in the staff v student 4 x 100m relay. A fierce battle took place on the home straight. It was so nice to see teachers and students enjoying the day out of the classroom. At the end of the day, there could only be one winner though and that House was LYONS! Well done to Lyons House on winning their first sport carnival in over 5 years. 2nd was Melba, 3rd was Maris and the defending champions from 2019 were 4th in Chisholm.

Division Intermediate Football (Year 9 & 10) – Wednesday 11th May

After a lockdown 2021 which saw our winning football teams have regional finals cancelled, our Year 9/10’s were hungrier than ever for Intermediate Football day. Our coaches Greta and Imogen had the team well drilled by the 2nd half of the first game and our team was gelling with out game style. Pia Juricic was becoming a problem for the University High midfielders and Keira Lindemans was kicking goals from the 40m line. Our defense was solid all day and at times cold because the ball was not going down there very often. Birthday girl Poppy McDonald and her running teammates in Lucinda Hanrahan and Katie Brown did a great job running both ways at all times. At the end of the first game MGC defeated UHS 78 points to 0. Brunswick also defeated UHS in round 2 and this left a grand final between MGC and Brunswick in the 3rd game. Our team had been watching their opponents with note pads in the 2nd round and knew what they were up against. Some great running by Macy Tyrell and Bronte Mosely in the first quarter set up a few goals to our advantage. Olivia Cavka, Scarlet Cusmano and Lily Murrihy were getting their hands dirty in the midfield and were taking the ball away from Brunswick by quarter time. There was plenty of heat in the game and it was our second quarter that saw 10 goals kicked to 0 that finished the match in favor of MGC. It was ruthless football and the team worked incredibly well together in an unstoppable performance. Izabela Ignjic finished the game with a couple of goals as well to put the icing on the cake. MGC defeated Brunswick by around 90 points when the final siren went. Great effort by all and onto Regional Finals next term! Thanks to Rosa V for assisting in running the day.
