MTC Ambassador Program 2022

It is with much pleasure that I can announce that Melbourne Theatre Company have accepted to application of Ash Parkinson from year 11 into their Ambassador Program for 2022.

Each year since 2010, a group of Year 11 theatre-lovers have been selected as MTC Ambassadors, embarking on a year-long extension program that offers insight into the world of professional theatre. Each month the Ambassadors meet with MTC staff and artists and share their experiences of theatre with like-minded peers.

Meeting roughly once a month, MTC Ambassadors are offered the chance to extend their knowledge and experience by attending MTC productions and sharing their responses to theatre with a group of like-minded young people. In 2022, MTC Ambassadors will attend 8 MTC productions at Southbank Theatre and Arts Centre Melbourne and meet a range of MTC staff and artists for exclusive Q&A opportunities.

Ambassadors also take a leadership role which has two functions; to act as youth representatives within the Company, and to act as advocates for MTC within their school and social communities.

Please keep your eye on up-coming newsletter, where Ash will share some of her experiences with the Melbourne Theatre Company.

Congratulations Ash.

SLAP. BANG. KISS

Written by winning playwright Dan Giovannoni tracks three young people whose stories kickstart a series of events none of them could have anticipated, transforming them into global symbols of revolution. But when their stories go viral and the whole world is watching, what will they do next?

ON the 27th of April the VCE Drama students spent the MTC performance of SLAP BANG KISS. It was wonderful to be back seeing live theatre again!

SLAP. A video of 16-year-old Immi hitting a security officer goes viral.  BANG. Sofia’s impassioned speech for the victims of a school shooting makes international news. KISS. In the car park of a small-town Woolies, people rally around Darby and Daniel as the boys lock lips in an attempt to set the world record for the longest kiss. Exploring themes of activism, community and hope, director Katy Maudlin delivers a bold production. The characters in SLAP. BANG. KISS. are not unlike the many young activists who have gained global attention.

Year 9 Actor's Workshop

Last term, the Year 9 actors workshop completed their first learning task. We reflected on myths, memories, and milestones from our own childhoods. We put our ideas together and worked as a group to create our short 4-minute performances which included at least one transformation of time. This is where time does not run chronologically, for example, starting at the end, can return us back to the present and then bring us to another point in the past.

Showing these time transformations, we used some of these dramatic devices:

  • The actors can freeze
  • A dialogue que
  • Reading a letter or diary
  • Using a photo image

Below are some short clips from some of the performances!
