1/2 Learning

What have the 1/2s been up to so far this term?

What a wonderful start to the term we have had! It has been so good to see our students again after the break, mingling with their friends and learning. Here is a sneak peek of what has been happening in our neck of the woods.

MATHS

It's been all hands on deck with numbers over these last few weeks. We have been counting fowards and backwards from different starting positions, making numbers using various materials and practising writing digits correctly.  It's so important that we are familar and confident with our number system so that we can learn to operate with them and grow our number knowledge!

Here are some pics of what we have been doing in class.

You can see that we have been using a range of resources to help us explore place value.

Online tools such as arrow cards are a great way for us to check our work.

Here are some useful links: https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/arrowCards/

The tool below allows you to make numbers using MAB blocks and then split the numbers to check how many towers of 10 make a 100 and so forth.

CLASS MASSES

1/2MP hosted the first class mass for 2022 last Friday, 6th May and it was great! We read confidently and sang joyfully! It was great to have the whole school back participating in the Mass with us. Some of our parents and family members were able to join us too, as well as Fr David, our new parish priest, celebrating his first SJV school mass. Our theme was Mother's Day, and we made some beautiful flowers to give to our mums if they were able to come to the Mass. For those who couldn't be there we saved them a flower as an extra Mother's Day gift. Have a look at our flowers below:

Inquiry

We are learning to identify objects from the past and to compare daily life in the past with daily life now. After watching a video about life in the 1950s, these were some of the things that we noticed about life then and now.

How was life different in the 1950s?

In the past, TV was not invented so they played board games. - Vinusha

In the past, they had no cars so they rode bikes, but now we do have cars. - Sanuli

In the past they had a wooden box with a block of ice but now we have a fridge. - Noah

I learnt what they cooked in the 1950’s (tripe - the lining of a cow’s stomach!) and they played music on a jukebox. - Isaac

In the past, there were wooden board games but now we have plastic board games with instructions. - Elaria

In the past, mum had to wash the dishes by hand but now we have dishwashing machines.-  Heidi

Mother's Day

The students in 1/2 really enjoyed making Mother’s Day cards for their wonderful mothers. They loved painting their hands and making prints, so that their mums would remember how small they once were. Students also wrote some information about their mums and what makes them unique and special to them.                                                               We hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day.

Digital Technologies

Learning Intention:

*To explore digital systems for a purpose

Success Criteria:

* I can log into the computer

* I can log into Google Drive

* I can find Google Classroom

The 1/2 students are enjoying attending Digital Technologies lessons run by Mrs Torrisi and Mr Hoare in the computer lab.  Last week, students practised logging into their Google accounts. Students practised going into Google Classroom and were told about how they will be using it this term.
