NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and 5 students are this week embarking on their first NAPLAN experiences. The National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy is made up of four standardised tests measuring achievement in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. For the first time, in 2022 all tests with the exception of Year 3 Writing are being conducted online via a secure browser.

While NAPLAN is a useful measure of student progress when viewed in conjunction with our many other standardised and informal assessments, it’s important to remember that a NAPLAN result is simply a reflection of a child’s performance on a given day at a given time on the given test. While we are always striving to ensure that all students are able to reach their academic potential at Roberts McCubbin Primary School, we are proud of every one of our students, regardless of their NAPLAN score.

Our thanks to the Year 3 and 5 staff for facilitating the tests in such a calm and supportive manner this week.

Parent & Friends Association (PFA)

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce our PFA leaders for 2022. Planning is well underway with the PFA who are organising a number of community events and fundraising for 2022- please look out for updates coming your way!

SCHOOL COUNCIL

As highlighted in our last newsletter we will be introducing our 2022 School Councillors in the newsletter. Our second Councillor is Tamarra Darby:

My family and I first became part of the Robbie Mac community 10 years ago when my eldest daughter, Alice, started prep. I have 3 other children - Libby in Year 8, Kitty in grade 5 and Jeremy in Grade 1. My nephews, Billy and Harry, also go to the school. I work part time as a GP and enjoy gardening, walking and spending time with my family and border collie down at Somers.

We chose Roberts McCubbin all those years ago because of the confident and friendly nature of the Year 6 students leading the school tours, and I am happy to see that this quality continues in the current students! Being a member of School council has been a great way to meet other parents and become more involved in the school community. It's a fantastic opportunity to learn more about what's involved in the running of the school and to support the hard working staff.

Road Safety on bikes and parking in correct spaces

While it’s great to see so many families and students keeping active by walking or riding to school, community members have raised some concerns about road and footpath safety.

If your child does walk or ride to school, we would encourage you to remind them of how to do so safely. Children under 12 are allowed to ride safely on footpaths (while giving way to all pedestrians), which is the best option for most of our students. Some particular concerns have been raised by motorists about RMPS students riding unsafely on the road around drop off and pick up times.

On a related matter, a friendly reminder about parking at the front of the school on Birdwood St during drop-off and pick-up times. Please ensure disabled parking spaces remain available for those who need them and move on quickly, but safely, to limit traffic congestion.

Whitehorse Council have also asked us to remind families that it is an offence to park within the no standing area adjacent to designated school crossings such as ours on Birdwood St.

Student Supervision Before and After School

A reminder that supervision of students on school grounds begins at 8:45am and finishes at 3:45pm each day. No children should be unsupervised in the school grounds outside of these times.

If families do need to drop-off early or are unable to collect students by 3:45pm, a booking needs to be made with our fantastic Out of School Hours program, Team Kids. We strongly encourage all families to register with Team Kids as a ‘just-in-case’. More info at https://teamkids.com.au/venues/roberts-mccubbin-primary-box-hill-south-oshc/ or RobertsMcCubbinPS@teamkids.com.au or by calling 0499 403 079. Subsidised access to before and after school care is available to Health Care Card holders – speak to the Team Kids team for more information.

We hope you can join us via our Youtube link at Years 3-6 assembly on Friday at 2.45pm.
