College went down to Monivae Cavaliers 2-0.  Both teams used the ball well and looked to attack at every opportunity.  Best for College were Laura Featherston, Rupert Merrin and Charlie Hawthorne.

Division 5

College Lightning continue to improve with each game and  came away with a 6-2 win over Monivae.  Tobe Adamson, Lucy Roberts, Lachlan Rees and Rosie Dopheide scored goals and played  strong matches.  Tyler Butcher, Izzi Adamson, Olivia Rees,  and Ashleigh McNaughton did a great job in defence.  Skye Headlam was goalie for the day and played well.  The win keeps Lightning in the hunt for a finals birth.

College Storm played Dunkeld and had a solid 4 - 1 victory.  The match was fast paced, with both teams throwing caution to the wind in a bid to score.  Goals scorers for Storm were Luke Marshall, Nick Hoskyns, Charlotte Rowe and  Phoebe Russell, with all playing strongly for College.  Macey Hermon tackled with conviction, and was well supported by Chloe Baker and Charlotte Rowe.  The win keeps Storm in contention for a finals berth with 4 matches to play.

College Hurricanes won an entertaining match against Coleraine Gold 4-2.  The teams were locked 2 - 2 at halftime after Coleraine scored two quick goals to signify their intent.  Harry Mould, Harry Austin and Jack Austin scored the goals for College.  Jack Addinasll played his best match of the year and was ably supported by Olivia Mann, Sophie Merrin and goalkeeper Emily Ash.

Division One

College Thundersticks had a great battle against Dunkeld on the weekend recording a memorable 3-2 win. This was an important win for the girls putting them back into second position on the ladder. The girls got off to a great start thanks to captain Emily Johnston who converted off a short corner. Emily and Hannah Nichols were superb through the centre of the ground creating numerous chances. Emily scored again late in the second half and the girls went in with a 2-1 lead. Dunkeld outplayed the College team for much of the second half but credit to the girls who stood strong to win 3-2. Captain Emily Johnston scored all three goals and was well supported by Claudia Roberts and Gracie Austin played her best game on the wing.

In what was one of the best Division One Women’s games in a long time, College Strikers and Monivae played a 1-1 draw. This was a fast, intense and highly skillful contest. The “young guns” of this side including Ruby Cush, Isabelle Musson and Oliva Allen certainly stepped up and have now become integral members of this side. Chloe Russell and Chloe Anderson were rock solid in defence and Hannah Russell was quite brilliant scoring the equalizing goal with only 1min and 43 sec left on the clock pheeww!

The B Grade Blades had a great contest against Monivae on the weekend almost scoring their first goal of the season. Although defeated this team continue to improve each week and are now playing very competitive hockey. It was great to see Christine Woods back on the field for Blades.

The College Scorchers were defeated by top of the table Demons. Unfortunately, Scorchers let Demons get away in the first half and were unable to peg back the lead. Chantelle Butcher played a great game on the backline whilst captain Claire Dempsey and Nikita Cavill continue their consistent season.

College Gold

College Gold came from behind to draw with Coleraine, 1-1 in Round 11. We were undermanned and Jack Austin came up from Div 4 and had a wonderful first game in U16.  We had significant attack in the circle but couldn’t convert against a strong Coleraine defence. Coleraine scored the first goal in an overcrowded circle. Marcus Munro was dominant in our defensive goal, and Clancy Munro helped control the back line. Late in the second half Zac Cunningham scored our only goal, and he was ably assisted by Darcy Wall, Peter Finch and Will Merrin. Congratulations to all players.

Working with Children Check

Our large sporting program at the College revolves around the support and assistance of many parents and community members acting as coaches, managers, umpires and scorers. The majority of these people as required would have completed their Working with Children check, however, as of August 1st, there has been some updates to who is required to obtain one and many local sporting associations will be enforcing these changes. Please check out the link below if you do not have one currently but are involved in the sporting program – even if you just help out now and then. The easiest and best thing to do is just obtain it as the process is free and easy to complete. For more information please see the links below and/or speak to your head of the sport you assist in.

Football

The senior Football team took on Cobden Technical school on Tuesday to see who would be crowned the Western Country Champion School for 2017. It was an excited and pumped group of boys on the bus as they travelled to Mortlake for the game. Without captain of football Oli Hoskyns due to injury, Penshurst star Campbell Watt skippered the team on the day and despite a solid first 10 minutes, the well drilled and skilled opposition maximized their chances inside 50 and kicked the first 3 goals of the game by quarter time.

Adjusting to the speed of the game, we hit the scoreboard twice during the second quarter thanks to Hamilton Kangaroos young gun Seth Fiegert and we were back in the game. During the third quarter the backline were under huge pressure as Cobden wasted their chances early but eventually wore us down and took in a commanding 5 goal lead at the final change.

Determined not to give up, the whole team showed great pride and determination as they kicked the first two goals of the last quarter but the running capabilities of Cobden proved too good as they kicked the last 3 goals of the game to finish with a 7 goal victory.

In what was an exciting and entertaining game of school football played at a high level, we showed that having never come this far before in the local school’s competition we could match it with the best footballing talent in the region. Presentations concluded the day with Seth Fiegert being awarded the Ricky Barham medal for our team’s best player. Other important contributors over four quarters included Harris Jennings, Campbell Watt, Tom Verco, Daniel Cleggett and Alister Bright.

Thanks must go to Lachie Craig, Connor Hunter and the injured Charlie Summers for helping fulfill umpiring and running duties on the day and the Vallance family for providing oranges and photography on the day. Mark of the day went to Daniel Cleggett for his screamer in the goal square and goal of the day to Seth Fiegert for his nice finish from the boundary line. Funniest moment of the day goes to Lachie Holcombe for his “flop” of the day!

College Magpies

The College Magpies Junior teams have only one game to go for the home and away season and last week they had two great highlights – having the senior Hamilton kangaroos players taking training and then playing under lights on Friday night at Melville oval. The Under 13 team are currently sitting third and will look to win their last game before the finals to go in with confidence after a big loss to the top side last week. Consistent players over the last few weeks have been Michael Crowle, Jack Austin, Lachlan Rees and Jock Barrie. The Under 16 team are sitting clear on top of the ladder after defeating Coleraine on Friday and another win on Sunday should see them start as favourites for the premiership. The team has great depth with each player contributing and improving each week.

Girls Football

Congratulations to the College girls who played in the inaugural Hamilton Kangaroos youth girls team which had a successful first season making the grand final. The Co– captain and school sports prefect Brooke Mibus came runner up in the best and fairest. Erin Powell won the most improved award while Mitzi Adamson finished 5th in the best and fairest count – a great achievement for the youngest player in the side. It would be pleasing to see more of our talented female footballers try out for the side in 2018.
