Book Week

Book Week August 20-26

Each year since 1945 the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. During this time we spend one week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. During this time, we share and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. The theme this year is Dreaming with eyes open.....

At SKiPPS we grab any opportunity to celebrate reading. We have lots of exciting things happening to celebrate the 2022 CBCA Book Week.

A fun performance from Meerkat Productions

As a part of our Book Week celebrations, last Wednesday students enjoyed  a fun and entertaining  performance from Meerkat Productions who adapted two books shortlisted by the CBCA for the Book of the Year Awards.

Foundation to Year 2 watched a musical performance  'Stellarphant'  based on the story book by James Foley about an elephant who wants to be an astronaut and cleverly overcomes being continually rejected in job interviews.

The Year 3- 6 students enjoyed  a show adaptation of The Detectives Guide to Ocean Travel about a girl on a ship and the mystery of the missing jewellery.

Author Visit- Sue DeGennaro

On Wednesday 10th August the Year 1/2 students were delighted to learn how an author and illustrator plans their book. Sue explained the importance of planning the characters and the plot in her story. When asked many questions at the end of the session Sue told us that the hardest part of illustrating was ensuring that each character looked the same throughout the book.  The students were instructed step by step how to draw four different characters and the importance of the small details to give personality to each character.  The students were enthralled during the drawing session – as were the teachers.

Bianca Loiacono Author Visit

On Monday of this week, we were excited to welcome another author to celebrate Book Week. Bianca Loiacono is a SKiPPS parent, a talented artist (see our murals and recent SKiPPS merchandise) and also a children's author and illustrator.

Bianca visited the Foundation, Year 1/2 and Year 5/6 classrooms to talk about her first book (written with her non-dominant hand) and spoke to students about the process of thinking about writing and illustrating a book right through to actually involving the students in a live reading of a published version.

It was great to provide these wonderful opportunities for our students to engage with professional authors and to be inspired by their creative processes.

Please find the link here for Bianca’s book if you were interested in purchasing your own copy of her book.

Book Week Dress Up Parade : Friday August 26

The Year 6 Library Leadership team will be leading all students in a dress up parade on Friday 26th August after our assembly. We encourage all students to dress up as a character from a book that they have enjoyed. This continues to be a highlight on our school calendar as the students (& parents) share their creative thinking and costume making skills. If your child is stuck for ideas, encourage them to chat to their teacher and/or peers to share some ideas.
