From the Leadership Team

Dear Families,

I would like to commence my report by firstly thanking all our families for partnering with us to help provide a first-class education for your child/children.  We see this every day as we live our motto of Greater Care, Greater Connection, Greater Expectations and We’re Greater together.

Parents and carers play an important role in making our College a great school and we see this when you support your child/children to:

  1. Take pride in their work and in being a student at GSSC.
  2. Enjoy participating in all the learning opportunities the College offers.
  3. Aspire to excellence in their learning, play well together, and respect each other’s differences.
  4. Be at school every day and attend all classes.
  5. Be in full school uniform.

We might be a new school, but our students are leading the way in helping us to create a great school for everyone. This was never more evident than when our Student Representative Council met for the first time this term with representation from each year level. These groups are committed to making GSSC a great school for all students and their discussions are informing the decisions that are being made every day.  These discussions included:

  1. Reviewing parts of the school uniform.
  2. Improving RESPECT for everyone in the College.
  3. Understanding and an appreciation of the different cultures across the College.

These students continue to look at ways to make their school a better place for everyone and I am extremely proud of their enthusiasm and pride in their school.

Curriculum

Throughout this term our teachers have been focusing on re-writing our curriculum so that we can better address the learning needs of our students. In our Professional Learning Community meetings, we have been expanding our skills in developing assessment rubrics and using formative assessments to help us better identify our students’ learning needs. Our teachers also meet regularly in their Collaborative Teams to plan the curriculum for each teaching and learning area and this ensures we are providing high quality programs for our students. We have a focus on improving our classroom practice and to support this our teachers have the opportunity to visit each other’s classrooms to learn from each other. Our focus is on continuous improvement in our practice so that we can provide the best teaching and learning for your child.

College Captains

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate or College and Neighbourhood Captains who have worked closely with me this year and represent the voice of our students. Dante Sinclair-Dealy, Rowan Farren, Beth Gray, Skyler Norton, Olivia Judd and Ella-Rei Dunlop have been outstanding ambassadors for our College.

Their commitment to this role has seen them attend many events outside school hours including School Council meetings and School Council training, the ANZAC Day service, Welcome Nights, Year 6 into 7 Information Evenings, the raising of our flags’ ceremony and hosting the Deb Balls, these are just an example of how dedicated they have been to this role.

They have fulfilled their duties enthusiastically and with great pride. I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside these very talented young people and I wish them every success for their exams and for their chosen pathway in the future.

We are currently in the process of selecting our new College/Neighbourhood Captains for 2023 and we know there is again a very strong pool of talented and enthusiastic students to choose from.

As this is the last newsletter for this Term, I would like to thank all our families for the support you have shown us over the past ten weeks.

Regards,

Barbara O'Brien
