Rubbish Rebel Waste
Term 3 of Environmental Science
It has been a wonderfully busy two weeks in Enviro for students across all year levels.
Grade 4’s enjoyed exploring food labeling and finding out the origins of the ingredients in their favourite packaged foods.
All students enjoyed planting this week as our biodiversity unit continues. Students in Foundation - Grade 2 planted both edible seeds and flowering plants. They enjoyed the challenge of putting their own gloves on and soaking peat pellets to create soil for their seeds.
Grade 3’s have begun growing mushrooms. They added the peat moss to compost mycelium which will be the basis for our growing mushrooms. We can’t wait to watch them grow over the coming weeks.
Senior students have planted native seeds, using vermiculite to enhance their germination.
Waste in our yard
Our students are doing an amazing job at cleaning up any waste that blows into our yard. There are tongs and buckets available at recess and lunch if students wish to collect rubbish.
Thanks to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Climate Action Grant we have been able to purchase a new storage tub to store all of our clean up equipment.
Bread Bag Recycling
Our school is collecting bread bags to send off to Wonder Recycling Rewards. The more we collect the more points we earn for our school. Points = sports equipment. Bring your empty bread bags, no matter the brand to the Enviro Room.
AUGUST is our last month to collect so please bring them in ASAP!
Oral care collection
Our school has signed up for the Terracycle/ Colgate Community Garden challenge. We need your used oral care packaging to earn us votes, the more product packages we collect the more votes we earn, the better our chances of winning a community garden! It’s easy to get involved, simply bring ANY BRAND completed oral care products (image below) and we will collect them and send them away for recycling. Bring them to the Enviro room until October!
Tablet blister pack collection
Our school is continuing to add solutions to waste in our community. We have recently purchased a Terracycle recycling bin to collect tablet blister packs to be sent away for recycling. If you have any tablet blister packs at your home you can send them to school with your child and they can drop them into the Enviro room collection box. NO MEDICATION IS TO BE LEFT IN THE BLISTER PACKS.
This project is funded by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Climate Action Grant.
