Grade 1/2 News

Term 3, Week 8

Grade 1 and 2 Reminders:

  • Next term as part of Topic students will be building Robots using craft materials - we are hoping families can begin collecting items for us and we thought the holidays might be a good time to start! We won't be needing the items until later in the term so this collection can continue early in the term. Thank you!

What we have been up to...

What a fantastic term 3 we have had with many highlights along the way, a stand out recently, was the wonderful time had by students visiting the Melbourne Zoo. They enjoyed visiting all the different animals at the zoo and learning some new facts along the way. The bus ride also seemed to be a highlight for many. A big shout out and thank you to the parent helpers who supported us on the day!

During a recent Mathematics session students designed their own question to practise collecting data for - it was terrific to see the different things the students came up with.

We have also been creating posters to showcase our new found animal knowledge, which students have created and written as part of learning about information reports.

Students have had various opportunities over the last fortnight to showcase their speaking and listening skills including sharing their information posters with their peers and discussing their family's culture!

Upcoming Fortnight:

Term 4 - Week 1 and 2

Literacy:  Our focus during Reading lessons will include students using the strategies 'Practise common sight words and high frequency words' and 'Use pictures, illustrations and diagrams' to support the understanding of what is being read.

Writing sessions will focus on the correct use of punctuation (particularly using apostrophes) and in week 2 we will look at writing procedural texts.

During Sound Waves we will focus on the phonemes 'or' as in horse and 'ir' as in bird.

Mathematics:  We will begin the term looking at place value and skip counting (2s, 5s, and 10s). Students will also practise applying their number knowledge to problem solving activities.

Topic:  Next term 'Robot Buddies' is the title of our topic. Throughout this topic students will explore the properties of materials and which ones will be useful to building a robot. Students will learn about the process of creating, imagining, designing and writing instructions for others to follow.
