"From the College Archives"

The St. Peter’s College Chapel was originally the Parish Church of the Catholic Parish of Tooradin. The Archbishop of Melbourne, Daniel Mannix blessed St. Peter’s Church on Sunday, December 3rd, 1922. It remained the parish church for some eighty years.

By 2002, the parish of Tooradin had diminished to a size where it was not viable to support a faith community. As a result, and due to the diminishing number of vocations to the priesthood, the Diocese of Sale could no longer appoint a Parish Priest to minister to the Tooradin community and, therefore, the church building became redundant.

The Tooradin Catholic Community did not want to see their Church just fall into disrepair or, even worse, decay and be neglected. In 2002, they invited Mr. Terry Feely to meet with them, and they offered him the building for use as a college Chapel. He was immediately taken with the building as it was dedicated to St. Peter, the patron of the College. He was particularly pleased with the symbolism within the building, especially the stain class windows which not only contain Petrine symbols such as the Keys to the Kingdom and an upside down cross, the symbol of Peter’s martyrdom, but also the colours used in the windows were the same as the St. Peter’s College colours: maroon and gold. The side windows and the exterior of the building also echo the grey that is part of the St. Peter’s College badge. The large statue of St. Peter that has pride of place in the foyer was also an attractive asset of the building. Consequently, the St. Peter’s College community, through Terry Feely, gratefully took possession of the building.

The building was moved, via the South Gippsland Highway on the back of two trucks and delivered to the Cranbourne Campus, February, 2003. It was re-dedicated by Fr. Andrew Wise on September 14th, 2003. Today, the building is commonly referred to as the St. Peter’s Chapel.

We give thanks to the former parishioners of Tooradin for their foresight and generosity.

Performing Arts Excursion

The reviews are in: ‘Six’ is an absolute smash hit!

On Thursday August 18th, senior Performing Arts students from the Clyde North campus travelled to the city to see Tony Award-winning show ‘Six’ at the Comedy Theatre. For most of our students, this was their first ever opportunity to see a live professional musical theatre production.

Written by Cambridge alumni Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, 'Six' is a modern retelling of the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr. They come together as a band to stage a pop concert and invite the audience to hear their stories. They cannot decide who should be the lead singer, so they initiate a competition, or singing battle, to see who has suffered the most as Queen. Each wife believes they have had it toughest and they belittle each other’s attempts to prove their hardship. However, they become frustrated that their place in history is defined by one man. Together, they decide to pick up the pen and the microphone, and re-write history as their own HER-story. They are more than a rhyme, more than a wife, and much more than one King could handle.

Full of energy, wit and sass, ‘Six’ was the perfect show for our students to study as part of their Music and Drama curriculum.

Below are some of the students’ reviews of the show:

“Six the musical was an amazing experience, the lighting and the sound effects were perfectly executed. I was most impressed by the vocal ability of the cast, I finally understood what a crescendo was supposed to sound like. It was slay 11/10!!”- Sofia Sabelino

“Last night was the first time I had ever been to see a musical. 'Six' was absolutely amazing. For me personally, I watched each of the musicians in the band the whole night and how they interacted with the actresses while performing. The sound from the band was amazing and their performance throughout each of the songs were unique and inspiring to me.” - Dylan Bird

“This was my first musical and I was amazed. The vocals and instrumental aspect of this musical were always on point and definitely impressed me. I would definitely go again if I had the chance.” - Agnes Simon

“The show was so full of energy and it was really engaging. It was so enjoyable and fun, I definitely want to see the show again.” - Medi Yowin

“Six was an amazing musical. This was a fun excursion because I really enjoyed hearing the story about the six women who were abused by King Henry. I loved the drama and the musical was captivating.” - Yiota Drakopoulos

“I wasn't expecting the show to be as good as it was, the drummer inspired me with how smooth and in time she was, I'd definitely go if I was given the chance again.” - Sururo Guma

“Last night, we went to Six the musical in the city. I really loved the performance because the energy that the cast brought was amazing and each of their performances had me in awe of how well they performed and how much practice they put in. The band were also incredible and I loved how they interacted with the main cast during the musical.” - Kirsten Canda

Our special thanks to Miss Brooke Massee for coming along on the night and to Miss Karen Williams for helping coordinate this excursion.

Happy Science Week...for another year!

Science Week 2022 continued strongly all week at Clyde North with excellent student attendance! Everyone enjoyed the "glass" theme!

Students enjoyed all the activities offered-Miss Hyland's Eye dissection, Mrs Balder's Geology demonstration and Mrs. Joseph's colourful Chemistry show!

Also, all students enjoyed making the stained glass windows!! A very big thank-you goes out to Mr. Islami's tutor group class and our lovely ladies in the library who created some extremely beautiful stained glass windows designs! These designs are now a permanent display on the Library windows. Have a look at them when you're next in the library!

We also had our guest speaker, Dr. Stephen van der Velden, talk to us about how fibre optic cables are used to take stress measurements in planes.

We finished off Science Week with our annual Science Week Clyde North morning tea-always a huge and colourful event! This year we were very lucky to have Bishop Greg in attendance too! He thoroughly enjoyed the morning tea festivities, too!

It was a wonderful week and we had lots of fun!! We would like to thank everyone for their contribution and participation and we look forward to Science Week 2023!!...

But it's not over yet!...we still have a rocket to launch and the Prince Rupert's glass drop demonstration too! So, stay tuned!

Until then, "may your glass always  be always half full"!!"

Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

Hygiene Care Packages

On June 14th 2022, I completed a sustainable development project. The aim of the project was to spread awareness of sanitation and basic hygiene. As well as for students to know the importance of basic everyday tasks like hand washing – following through with the proper steps. This project solely focused on providing FREE basic hygiene items in a care package for students at St. Peter's College.

Previously to the day of the project, I contacted Pinchapoo – they are a hygiene non-profit organisation. They were able to supply myself with 4 boxes filled with 150 pre made packages.

I connect with this goal because I believe it is one of the most important goals - as every year, millions of people die as a result of a lack of clean water or basic hygiene.

This goal is important to our world as we know that access to clean water, as well as proper sanitation and hygiene, can help to alleviate poverty. It has the potential to save lives, grow the economy, keep children in school,

and expand possibilities for women and girls. Communities are stronger and more resilient when they have access to clean water. Without clean water, illnesses like as diarrhoea, parasitic infections, and chronic intestine inflammation are widespread, preventing children from absorbing essential nutrients and making them more vulnerable to other health problems.

On the day I had all the packages ready to be handed out at my stall. Where I was promoting adequate hygiene and sanitation through posters on the wall as well as flyers being handed out to every person who received a package.

It was a successful day as all 150 hygiene care packages were given out to the students at St. Peter's College. They were able to gain an understanding of how to take proper care of their hygiene.

Life below water

Clean up SPC day

On June 14th 2022, we ran a clean up SPC day with the year 12 VCAL class. We spent two hours picking up rubbish and sorting recycling, waste and food scraps to be put in the correct bins.  From such little time, we managed to pick up 33 kg of rubbish from our yard.

This SDG goal is to keep our oceans clean and use them sustainably so we are able to keep them protected for future generations to use. We wanted

to pick up the rubbish in our yard as even though it isn't in water yet, all the rubbish we drop in our yard ends up in our oceans.

I connect with this goal as I think saving our oceans is such a time sensitive and critical issue.

If we continue to go at this rate, by 2050 there will be more rubbish in the sea then fish!

These statistics are devastating so if I can encourage you to do your part and dispose of your rubbish correctly then I have achieved something.

Year 7 - 10 Music Incursion: ‘Express Yourself’

On Thursday August 25th, students from select Year 7 to 10 Music classes attended a one-hour hip-hop performance workshop called ‘Express Yourself’, presented by Musical Futures Australia. Our hosts, MC Mantra and DJ Sizzle, transformed 6A at Clyde North into a professional performance space as they delivered a remarkable hip-hop performance set. Not long after, they had our students getting up to produce beats and freestyle rap verses on their own. It was a pleasure to see our students get so involved in the workshop session. We hope it has given them inspiration and ideas for their creative compositions and performances for this semester.
