Arnolds Creek turned on some cracking weather for the Year 7 & 8 Boys cricket match against Gisborne Secondary School.
Captains Aban Khan & Samuel Partridge won the toss and elected to bowl to try and keep Gisborne to an achievable score. Gisborne started off well and were chipping away with singles here and there creating a steady total. Our bowlers took a little bit to get used to the conditions with Gisborne getting on top early. Jujhars spin bowling and Abans pace were too tough for Gisborne to handle and the boys finished with 3 wickets each. To Gisbornes credit, they were very disciplined with their batting and finished with a tally of 84 runs after 19 overs.
When it was Staughtons time to bat, they were encouraged to at least bat the 19 overs out, as if they did that, they would come very close to chasing down the score. Jujhar and Abis opened the batting, with Abis losing his wicket early unfortunately. Jujhar was seeing them well, hitting 2 sixes and 4 fours, increasing the run rate rapidly. Jujhar lost his wicket for a total of 35 runs, a solid performance. After that, we had a big batting collapse, losing 5 wickets for 1 run. Ayden Brown threatened to take away the game from Gisborne late, hitting some late boundaries but the boys were all out for 78 runs falling 7 runs short of a victory.
The fact the boys hadn’t played together, some having not played the game before, it was an amazing effort and they should be proud of themselves.
Honourable mentions:
Man of the Match: Jujhar Singh Tamber: Bowling figures: 3/8 off 4 overs Batting: 35 off 23 balls (2 sixes, 4 fours)
Aban Khan: Bowling figures: 3/4 off 3 overs
Ayden Brown: Batting: 13 runs including 3 fours.
Sam Partridge: Captains knock to prevent batting collapse: 9 runs
Well done boys, onwards to next year!
Mr Stewart
