Messages from our Librarian - Mrs Adams
When a reader's ability is matched with a text at the same level, the reader is targeted. A targeted reader reports confidence, competence, and control over a text. A targeted reader can read a book with 75 percent comprehension, providing an appropriate level of challenge. When a text is too difficult, the reader can become frustrated. it the text is too easy, the reader becomes bored.
Here at St Joseph's, we have a reading platform called The Lexile Framework where we match our readers with texts. You may have heard your child in Stage 2 and Stage 3 speak about Lexiles. We even have a few children in Stage 1 working on Lexiles. The matching of reader and text is based on students' comprehension. Lexile measures enable teachers and librarian to motivate students to read by matching them with material that they can understand.
Children have access to an ELibrary and also a special section in our library that is designated for Lexiles. The children can select books that appeal to them and once read can complete a comprehension quiz. To score a point the child needs to achieve at least 7 out of 10. The children are then rewarded with certificates when they reach certain levels.
Blue 10 points

Your child may come home with a reader that has a number on an orange sticker. They can read within a range of 100 below this number and 5o above giving them access to a whole range of books.
Certificates are given out at assemblies and we reward our Gold Certificate Holders with a book of their choice. Congratulations to our Gold Awardees Mylie Doust, Dustin McBain and Fletcher Barratt.
All stages are continuing to work on Non-Fiction
Stage 2 has been working on a labelled diagram in which they have researched the facts.
Stage 3 has chosen an animal that they think is ugly and prepared pages that could be included in the book The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ugly Animals.
It's getting close to the end of the year so could I please ask you to look for any library books. We have many overdue books and your child will be receiving an overdue notice in the coming weeks. If you feel you have returned them or there is a problem please let me know.
Happy Reading
