Alice Paget

Term 4 is well and truly underway and we are almost to the end of the 2022 school year. Well done to our Year 7s on their first year at Westall Secondary College thus far.

We look forward to you supporting our new Year 7s of 2023, in the upcoming Orientation Day.

Upcoming events in Term 4:

  • Grade 6 ’Welcome Night’: on the 17th November at 6pm - new students, parents, and guardians will have the opportunity to meet the teachers and begin their transition into Westall Secondary College.
  • Grade 6 Orientation Day will take place on the 13th December. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and parents, and we look forward to making the transition for your son/daughter a positive and supportive experience.
  • Year 7 and 8 Swimming lessons: This term, during Sport classes, the students are taking part in 3 swimming lessons at Noble Park Aquatic Centre on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.
  • Selection of our Junior School Captains for 2023. All Year 7 students, going into Year 8 next year, have had the opportunity to apply for this leadership role. The 2 selected captains and vice-captains for 2023 will have an array of leadership opportunities, including student voice, public speaking, promotion of the college, assistance with the transition of our new Year 7s into the college, and input into the running of the junior school at Westall Secondary College. I would like to congratulate Aleasha Rodgers, Sofia Ho, Jade Petersen, and Christian Pham on their successful appointment as Captains for 2023! Thank you and well done, Brighty, Alex, Valentina, and Israel for your outstanding role as Junior School Captains this year!

Headstart will begin in Week 9, with 1 week of Academic skills followed by 1 week of Lifeskills. During Academic skill week, Year 7 students will transition into their new Year 8 timetable and Year 8s into their Year 9 timetable for 2023. It is important that all students continue striving for excellence as the 2022 school year comes to a close.

Year 8 Visual Arts

Year 8 students researched the work of renowned Australian artist Anthony Breslin, whom we were very privileged to have worked with, in 2013, on a large totem installation at Westall Secondary College called ‘Sacred Tribal space’.

The students explored tribal heads found in a range of cultures used to ward off evil spirits. The work in progress is tribal heads created with timber scraps, plywood, acrylic paint, and PVA glue. Large panels of plywood hold all the characteristics of the tribal face. The students worked with timber materials to create bold, abstract, scary, humorous, and ‘wacky’ faces. The artworks will be painted with acrylic colours, glossed with timber varnish, and displayed to ward off any ‘evil spirits’ lurking in the Westall corridors!!

Year 7 Digital Technology

The Year 7 students worked on assembling and coding ‘LEGO ROBOTS’ created by Mindstorm. The students worked in groups to collaborate and construct the Robots using an instruction manual. The happy smiles are the groups that finally got their Robot to move!

Endless hours were put into connecting the Lego pieces, checking they are all in the right place, and then using the inbuilt programs to code the Robot to move in a range of directions. The students developed patience, and persistence, and enhanced their fine motor skills. They learned how to plan, work with a team, and above all, achieved a sense of accomplishment.
