What’s happening in the Garden?

It was a pretty wild and rainy Term 2 but the weather didn’t stop us from doing some wonderful learning together.

Rain may have kept us inside but we were happy our plants were getting a good drink! Water is vital for strong and healthy plants and we enjoyed learning all about mulch and how it benefits plants and soil by retaining moisture and preventing weeds. We then got our hands muddy for the sake of science and learned how the properties of mud determine whether it is clay soil or sandy soil and how this impacts growing veggies. From there, we explored how composting creates the perfect loam soil for veggies (and worms) to thrive. We finished our gardening journey with a rich lesson exploring sustainability, resource use and the ancient skill of weaving. Aboriginal people used what they found in nature to make tools and equipment like eel traps and Dilly Bags. We learned apply the skill of weaving to create mats and garden beds from grasses and branches collected from our school grounds.

In Term 3, the Year 3 - 6 students begin their Gardening classes where we will spend a very busy and exciting term developing our gardening and environmental science skills. We will kick start our learning journey with a lesson on seasonality where we will sew our summer vegetable seeds in our greenhouse in preparation for the warm weather. Along the way we will learn how to correctly and safely use gardening equipment while exploring practical garden skills like plant identification, fertilising, composting, and harvesting.

Receiving assistance from volunteer parents, carers and community members is an important aspect of the SAKG Garden program. If you are able to assist in any way, whether it is basic maintenance or assisting with Garden classes, please email the office at montmorency.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au with ‘Garden Volunteer’ in the title to be included in our weekly volunteer mailing list.

In the Kitchen – Term 3

This term Foundation and Year 1/2  students will be having kitchen classes once a fortnight. They have already had their first session where we discussed how to be safe in the kitchen. They are really excited to commence cooking in their next session!

Volunteers needed!

If you can spare an hour or two once  a fortnight to help out in one of the cooking sessions it would be much appreciated. Without adequate support, sessions often have to be modified and the things we make simplified. In order for our students to get the most out of the program we require the assistance of 2-3 volunteers per class and also some assistance for preparation prior to classes.

To sign up, please email: montmorency.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au and put 'Attention: Elisa/SAKG' in the subject.

Thanks,

Elisa
