Learning Stones Project

Our Parks & Gardens SBAT students have been undertaking an indigenous construction project, aimed at providing an avenue for young people to maintain connection to country, and will represent Aboriginal culture by incorporating the colours of the Aboriginal flag amongst the design’s features; including red scoria, yellow central stone elements and black bench seating. The Students, under the guidance of trainers Leigh Niemann and Jamie Burton and in partnership with John Murray, Koori Education Support Officer, have created a space to be used as an outdoor classroom, and a meeting place used by the College community sit, reflect and relax. Construction is well under way, as can be seen in the images. The adjoining Kindergarten and primary school will contribute totems to the project and to add personal significance to the project, each of the 13 SBAT students will be designing and painting their own totem, in the colours of the aboriginal flag. The intention is to leave their legacy at the school when they move on to the next steps in their pathway. By the next issue of this newsletter, I hope to present the finished space.
