Second term had a bit of a disjointed start this year, with Monday being a student free day, Tuesday was ANZAC Day and Wednesday was the house athletics carnival, with the first day of classes being Thursday last week.
The student free day was the follow up Emotional Preparedness session for all staff, which focussed on zones of performance, rest and recovery, healthy thinking habits, the nervous system and how it affects behaviours, thoughts and feelings and psychological first aid, all related to trauma. A key idea was what is trauma? It is not the event or action that happens, but how you are affected after the event or action.
The school captains, Callum and Ellie, spoke at the ANZAC Day service, with a focus on the Vietnam War and how the service men and women at the time were often not celebrated for their service, but were denigrated instead. Thank goodness that the thinking has changed over the years so that these people, who often fought for their country because they had to, not because they chose to, are now recognised and thanked for their service.
The weather was perfect for the Athletics carnival. There was a large number of students present, however the attendance rate of about 25 – 30% non-attending was disappointing, as numbers who participate in even just a couple of events can often swing the results in a house’s favour. Congratulations to all participants on the day; with the winning house being Bogong, followed by Feathertop and then Hotham.
The school has now been appointed project managers, who will be meeting on site this coming Wednesday to go through the next steps in the plan. Other than knowing that the water pipes are going to be replaced, we have no further details yet. Fortunately, the school has returned to almost normal operating status, with only drinking and cooking water needing to come from bottled water sources.
With the weather taking a turn, and knowing that it will only get worse, families are reminded to get prepared by purchasing winter jackets and tops from the Mount Beauty Hardware and Drapery, as we only have a small collection of free winter uniform items at the moment. The school is heated, so students not wearing the correct uniform will be asked to remove other jackets/tops for the day.
Please get in touch with your child’s Year Level Coordinator if you are having trouble ensuring your child has the correct uniform.
