Sustainability at FHS

Frankston High School endeavours to be an environmentally responsible and sustainable school.  The world is changing; the Earth’s climate, population and stretched planetary resources are all going to have a significant impact on the students we teach.  Our aim is to inform students through engaging them and educating them in sustainability and what it will mean for their futures.

Frankston High School already has a rain water tank that feeds into some of our toilet systems, a student environmental committee that is proactive in raising sustainability awareness and conducts environmental impact checks, a sensor system that turns lights and fans off automatically, LED lighting that significantly reduces energy consumption and an emerging recycling program.  These are some in among a list of many other initiatives.

The future can sometimes appear bleak; forests are being destroyed (Frankston High School uses FSC approved paper sources), temperatures are increasing globally, populations are peaking, pollution is increasing and there are signs it is contaminating human food and water supplies.  However it does not need to be so dire.

With appropriate education in schools we are investing in a brighter future. Ways in which to manage the future for the better and ways to make a difference will be decided by our students. With the right education they will make the right choices; some of which will no doubt be extremely tough. With a concerted effort from all members of the school community we truly can (yes, it’s a cliché but still as true as the day it was coined) make a difference.

All students interested in pursuing environmental interests are more than welcome to come along to the student environmental group meetings. They run Mondays in Room 43 at lunch times where they will meet with likeminded individuals. There are no restrictions on year level.

As the Sustainability Coordinator at FHS I am always open to offers of advice, help or just general enquiries so, if you feel motivated, drop me a line at bmckinnon@fhs.vic.edu.au.

Sustainability tip:  Use an ecofont (www.ecofont.com) to help reduce ink usage when printing documents. It will save you money and make the resource last far longer.
