Maths application trip/Aplikace matematiky na výletě

On Friday 24th March, the Year 6 Maths Standard Level Applications classes went to Matejska Pout' to do some real life maths as part of their revision for the IB exams. The aim of the day was to graph, in real time, the displacement of the ferris wheel with respect to time. This involved them getting into groups of three and working together to ensure the measurements were recorded accurately. The students were then able to plot their data on both graph paper and on their GDCs and, as if by magic (otherwise known as maths!), they created a cosine model for the ride.

This enabled us to discuss the limitations of real life modelling (the ride stopping to let people on and off) as well as the amplitude and period of the graph and what they relate to in real life.

Students went on to complete past paper questions which explored circular motion such as that of ferris wheels, clocks and wind turbines. A successful afternoon, especially as the rain stayed away.

Celé odpoledne proběhlo úspěšně a ani jsme nezmokli.

Brain Awareness Week at the Academy of Science/Týden mozku v Akademii věd

Brain awareness week (Tyden mozku) celebrates the latest discoveries and trends in brain research and neuroscience. Leading Czech experts in the field of theoretical and clinical neuroscience give lectures and, this year, a small group of year 4 and 5 students attended a lecture presented by prof. RNDr. Aleš Stuchlík, DSc from the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences about memory and learning.

The lecture, entitled "How we learn and remember", focussed on current research into understanding how the signals transmitted through neurons and the connectivity of neural circuits are important in the creation of mental maps of the world. The lecture began with some background on brain anatomy and signalling and concluded with the top ten tips to help improve memory - which should certainly be useful as the final exams approach.

The Science Faculty

Týden mozku oslavuje nejnovější objevy a trendy ve výzkumu mozku a neurovědy. V rámci programu přednášejí přední čeští odborníci v oblasti teoretických a klinických neurověd, Letos se skupina studentů 4. a 5. ročníku zúčastnila přednášky prof. RNDr.

Recently I participated in an exchange week in France. Me and 16 other ECP students stayed with French host families in a small city called Nantes. It was an amazing experience as we got a look into the daily life of a typical French family and made great new friends with our partners. We had a full week packed with various different activities such as exploring picturesque parts of the old town, visiting the famous Mont-Saint Michel and shopping at a typical French food market. We enjoyed a full week of amazing and authentic French food, including baguettes and croissants, along with meals prepared by the host families such as quiche Lorraine, galettes and of course amazing desserts like crêpes and macarons.

My personal highlight of the exchange was the weekend because I spent two days in a beautiful little holiday home with one of the French families located on a small island called Noirmoutier. The weather was amazing and so we spent the days there going on bike rides around the island and even swimming in the freezing cold sea with my friend Nela and our two French Exchange partners. We were so lucky to get paired with such amazing people and we will definitely keep in touch with them.

Overall, I enjoyed the exchange very much and I feel as though my French has definitely improved thanks to all the interactions and conversations I had with people there. I certainly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to improve their foreign language and meet new people. If I ever get the chance, I would definitely want to do this again in the future.

Viktorie Suchánková, Year 4

Byl to úžasný zážitek, protože jsme mohli nahlédli do každodenního života typické francouzské rodiny a navázat skvělá nová přátelství s našimi partnery.

Pokud budu mít příležitost, určitě bych si to chtěla v budoucnu zopakovat.

A discussion with editor-in-chief/Beseda s šéfredaktorkou

'In the nineties in Prague, almost no one spoke English, so they sent me to interview all kinds of rock stars.'

On Monday, 27th March, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Byt a zahrada Martina Kotrbová visited our school. Mrs. Kotrbová was at the birth of the magazine Rock & Pop in the 1990s and in subsequent years she was working as a language editor for various lifestyle magazines such as Marianne and Bydlení.

Year 3 students of Czech language learned from her about the development of Czech print media from the 1990s to the present. They were probably surprised the most by the fact that in the 1990s, yet before the spread of the Internet, there was a clipping service operating in Prague, where one could order to collect articles based on a certain topic or a person.

Mrs. Kotrbová also introduced us to the content of the work of individual editors and the logistics of preparing a monthly magazine for deadlines. It is obvious that the same editorial duties are currently being done by fewer people than in the past. The rise in paper and energy prices causes that many magazines gradually opt to switch to an online version only.

The students reminded themselves what a perex (a leading paragraph) is, and they will surely use the new knowledge gained from the discussion when preparing their own school magazine.

V pondělí 27.3. 2023 naši školu navštívila šéfredaktorka časopisu ,Byt a zahrada‘ Martina Kotrbová.
