Food Technology

Student reflections and recounts of their experiences in Food Technology last term.

During Term One, we had Food Tech for our electives. It was a great experience! We learnt how to cook many different recipes. Some of them include muffins, apple turn-overs, risotto, cinnamon donuts, rice paper rolls and pizza. During this hour, I got to improve on my cooking skills, as well as working as a team and improving on my patience. Something I found a bit challenging during these classes was cleaning up after the cooking because I always found it a bit over-whelming and I figured out that it’s best to clean as you go. Something I really enjoying during this elective was getting to try the result of our cooking and also getting to prepare the actual food. But overall, I really enjoyed having this elective, and I would love to do it again!

In Term One Food Tech we have learnt a lot of cooking skills including: Knife skills and how to use them properly, how to correctly prepare certain foods, an example would be vegetables and how to wash and cut them the right way.

Food Tech has taught us many life skills that you will require in the future. We learnt how to produce various foods that are easy and simple to prepare.

To make this even more enjoyable, the teachers and educational staff were extremely helpful whilst making food, whether it was helping us check if our food was ready or not, or just using the ovens to make sure we didn’t burn ourselves.

To conclude our lively and enjoyable experience, we were able to make delicious rice paper rolls as our final assessment. Long story short, Food Tech was most definitely an amazing and astounding experience that was a joy for all!

In Food Tech, we made delicious, mouth-watering food. We made food such as muffins, apple turnovers, doughnuts and finally, pizza! Personally, for Sonakshi she found that the doughnuts and the pizza were her favourite. Adhunya enjoyed the process of making the pizza out of the dough, and we ended up with a great result. Our teacher Mr. Symmons was supportive and patiently demonstrated the instructions. He helped us when we were unsure of how things worked. We hope that this experience would help us later in life.

Visual Art

This term started with Year Seven Students becoming familiar with the Visual Art space for Secondary students.  We spent some time unpacking their goals for this term and starting to investigate what it takes to create a cohesive artwork.  Students then started investigating the Elements and Principles of Art and Design.  This will form the basis of their first summative assessment piece - an Explosion book.  Students were provided a template of the book they will create and started to investigate how they could incorporate their ideas in their own book.  Over the coming weeks students will start learning the importance of the Elements and Principles of Art and understand how to identify them in the world around them.  Stay tuned for their work in progress.

Health and Physical Education

The Year Seven Students in Physical Education have transitioned into Term Two exceptionally well.

Students started Week One by doing the beep test. The aim was for students is to improve their fitness levels and hopefully improve from their Term One result.

Students will be transitioning into exploring AFL and Soccer this term, focusing on skill development in both sports.

For Health, Year Seven students will be looking at Personal and Community safety starting off with delving into what is personal safety and how can we increase our safety in different situations.

English

Please find below some exemplary work of our Year Seven students responding to the below situation.

SCENARIO: It’s the Governments responsibility to enact laws to protect their citizens.  SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE! You are not happy with current laws around something you see as important. As a citizen, you have a voice, and it needs to be heard!

These responses show great depth of thought and research from our students.

We look forward to seeing how far they can keep taking their learning in Term Two as we look at poetry and analytical techniques.

Financial Literacy

In the first week of Financial Literacy for Term Two, Year Seven students have developed their expectations and learning goals for this term. They started by exploring the value and use of money, and how the concept of money has evolved over time while also exploring the difference between needs and wants.

Students have investigated how we could reduce our spending to save money and make wise consumer decisions by using unit prices and finding ‘best-buys’, with and without digital technologies. By understanding these concepts, students have developed the ability to apply these skills to make informed purchasing decisions, such as comparing prices when shopping at supermarkets. Here are some student works from Financial Literacy in Week One:

Robotics and Coding

In Term Two, two new classes have commenced the Introduction to Coding course. Learning to code in Python, students have written their first programs to display text on screen. They have then been challenged to create pictures using text characters, with some students even using the clear() and sleep() functions to animate these graphics.

Year Seven students working on the Spike Prime Challenge have continued their builds for this National Competition. The design brief is to create an autonomous robotic creature. To achieve this, students are making robots that have sensors to detect various features in the environment. Students then write code so that the robots can respond to the information detected by the sensors. Students are using the design cycle to test, evaluate and improve their robots. We look forward to seeing their final designs!

Science

This Term has started with the students reflecting on their prior learning from last term and the Chemistry unit they completed. They have written about what they enjoyed completing and which practical activities they have taken part in and what they learnt ,and posted these to their E-portfolio's.

In Week Two, students were exposed to our new topic by undertaking a pre-test. The new topic students are working on is Biology focusing on Classification of living organisms and Ecosystems.
