Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

Welcome back for Term Two!

We hope everyone had a nice relaxing break and is eager for a new term of learning. Students began week one beautifully, demonstrating high-quality expectations for their peers.

WRITING

In writing, students began drafting their memoirs based on different writing seeds they formed at the end of Term One. We recapped what sizzling starts are, and how to use emotive language to make our memoirs emotional and interesting. Students are using VCOP to edit their work, ensuring that they improve their vocabulary and punctuation skills throughout their writing.

READING

In reading, students are looking into author Anh Do and his migration story. They are completing an Author Study, where they analyse the characteristics of various Anh Do books such as Weirdo and Wolf Girl. Students have engaged in comprehension of The Little Refugee and making comparisons to Anh Do's Weirdo and his life.

MATHEMATICS

Students are beginning to focus on Location and Transformation in their fluid groups. They  are learning to use directional language on maps and cartesian planes, interpreting the location of a point or object. Students are investigating the scale of enlarging and reducing objects and shapes through their knowledge of division and multiplication.

INQUIRY

As we come to an end in our second Unit of Inquiry, students are conducting an investigation on a well known migrant of their choosing. They have deepened their understanding as they  used the key concepts of causation, connection, responsibility. Students demonstrated their research skills, using appropriate search engines such as Kiddle to refine their searches on their migrants.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

This week students in Years Five and Six competed in an Athletics Carnival. Students were respectful and supportive of all houses when competing and displayed great sportsmanship. All students are to be commended on their efforts and determination. Congratulations to all students who won ribbons and placed in their age group.
