Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

Welcome to Term Two of Year Two. We hope that you all had a fantastic holiday and spent time with the ones you love. This term is going to be jammed packed with a lot of exciting things happening during the nine weeks.

This term we will be continuing to explore our second unit of inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘How the World Works’ exploring into our Central Idea ‘Natural  Disasters contribute to changes in our local and global communities.'

Reading:

This term the students have begun with learning about Non-Fiction texts and their features. The students have explored into the contents page, index, glossary, captions, and labels. ‘A glossary is a mini dictionary for that book,’ Benji 2E. As a class we discuss that a Non-Fiction text is to provide information about a topic that is real life.

Writing:

In Writing, we have started our unit on Information texts. Students have spent the first week of term exploring facts vs opinions. We explored that a fact is something that is true for example an octagon has eight sides. An opinion is a belief that people have about something for example that Summer is the best season. Students looked into the structure of information reports and the importance of paragraphs. The structure includes the purpose, classification, description and conclusion.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students have explored probability through our warm up activities, to continue this at home. While at home you may discuss how likely an event is to occur for example how likely is it that they will attend school on a Monday? The students have enjoyed learning about doubles, near doubles and bridging to ten. We explore the part, part, whole model, this allowed the students to split numbers into parts and explore how the numbers are formed.

Inquiry:

Students begun our Unit of Inquiry Two with two weeks remaining of Term One. They have begun this unit full of enthusiasm and excitement about what they will inquire into while completing our learning journey. Students have inquired into our second two lines of inquiry. An inquiry into the causes of natural disasters and an inquiry into how communities prepare and respond to natural disasters. They have researched about Natural Disasters of their choices, they inquired into Earthquakes, Cyclones, Floods and Droughts.

Swimming:

Our first swimming week was a huge success. All students that are participating are having a fantastic time and learning a lot of lifetime skills. Students are continually responsible around the pool and take great care of being responsible for their belongings. They are looking forward to their next week of swimming and looking forward to sharing their skills with you.
