Leadership Report

Welcome to Term Two at Saltwater College

On behalf of the Saltwater staff, we would like to offer everybody a warm welcome return to school after the Term One break. We hope you are rested and ready for a full and exciting term ahead. From a leadership perspective, it has been a delight being at the gates each morning, greeting our families and students who are full of smiles. There has been a warm buzz of enthusiasm and excitement at the beginning of this new term. This has been extended into the classrooms where students have been engaged and ready to explore all the learning opportunities that Term Two has to offer.

As we have transitioned into a new term, many classes have started their next Unit of Inquiry. Students have been recording their wonderings and discussing the Central Idea of their unit. Students and teachers are looking forward to incorporating the core areas of the curriculum in their new inquiries. We encourage you to take some time at home to ask your child/children questions about the inquiry unit that they are studying and discuss ways in which they can continue their inquiry into these new topics at home.

Student Led Three-Way Conferences in Term Two

In order to celebrate the learning growth of our students and continue to strengthen our home/school partnership, in week three on Tuesday 9 May, our students will have the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and caregivers.

With the ratification of the new Victorian Government School Agreement and in order to meet our staff commitments, Saltwater P-9 College has scheduled early dismissal at 12:00 pm on Tuesday the 9th of May 2023 in order to accommodate the availability for all parents to attend the Student Led Conferences with their child/ren.

We look forward to seeing our families at school, sharing their child/ren's wonderful achievements.

ANZAC Day Assembly

Last Monday 24 April, we enjoyed a very special commemoration assembly remembering the day Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on Gallipoli in 1915. We would like to acknowledge our school captains who facilitated the Anzac Day assembly with pride.

During the assembly, wreathes were laid and students listened to ‘The Ode’ and ‘The Last Post’ followed by a one-minute silence to pay our respects. Students shared war poems and listened to our inspiring guest speaker - Luke Sweeney from The Royal Australian Airforce. It was an honour to remember those who had served or who are serving our country. Lest we forget.

Parent Communication

Thank you to our families who are proactive with our communication channels. We would like to remind all families that it is very important that parents and carers read and action all communication from school. We have multiple platforms for communication with parents (Schoolbox, Xuno, emails and newsletters). Facebook and Instagram complement our main communication channels.

Correspondence sent from school often contains important information about your child’s upcoming events such as excursions and incursions, camps, photo days, etc.  All notes regarding camps, excursions and incursions contain a cut-off date and unfortunately, we will not accept late notes and payments. It is very important that all communication is actioned to ensure that students can attend all the amazing opportunities that Saltwater has to offer. If you need any support with the communication platforms, please reach out to our IT department.

School Parking

As the school continues to grow, traffic congestion and parking remain an area of concern for our entire community. As mentioned in previous correspondence with parents, we have been working closely with Wyndham Council and the Saltwater Community Centre to establish ways, programs/ideas, that can assist in alleviating some of our traffic issues.

We are exploring the development of a walking school bus where designated community members will meet students at different pick-up points and walk students to school instead of driving. We will continue to inform the community about the progress of this valuable program as developments occur.

Mothers' Day

Mother's Day is on Sunday May 14th. Happy Mother's Day to all of our mothers, grandmothers, and other important individuals in our lives.  We hope that breakfast in bed, handwritten cards, and cuddles will put a smile on your face. We're expressing our love to anyone in our community who might find Mother's Day tough because they're missing a relative or are otherwise having a hard time. Look out for information via XUNO, regarding our Mothers' Day Stall at school.

Late Arrivals

Just a friendly reminder that our school day begins at 8.30 am with gates open at 8.15 am for our parents/carers and students. Our secondary students' days begin at 9.00 am with the gates open prior to this.

The first part of your child/ren's school day is a very important part. Every class has a morning routine where students prepare themselves for the day ahead (unpacking their bags, talking to their friends and handing in notes or sharing messages, whilst the teacher is marking the roll). This part of the day sets the children up for a successful day of learning.

Classroom instruction in literacy and numeracy commences at 8.30 am for primary year students; this means, for a child to feel confident in what is expected of them, they will need to be present and available during the mini-lesson and teacher instruction time.

We look forward to a productive term ahead and are eager to welcome you to our classrooms in week three for our Student Led Three-way Conferences. Please remember to book through our Xuno platform.
