STATE CROSS COUNTRY

The biggest day on the SSV cross country calendar was held at Yarra Glen Racecourse on Thursday the 13th of July. The Vermont cross country team was 14 runners strong, showcasing our amazing depth of talent across multiple age groups. The track was incredibly soft under foot which saw some runners from other schools lose shoes to the mud, and others opt to run barefoot for their entire race! With our shoelaces tied tight and our sights set on success Team Vermont rose to the challenge.

Congratulations to all for their performances and efforts on the day. Your commitment to being your best shone through with your attitude and performances. The school holiday training sessions with Hank the team mascot paid off!

The cross country season is not done yet for Alexandra R, Jack F, Angus A, Harry A, Robbie P, Finn M & Brooke P. They will compete again this Saturday the 22nd of July in the Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships. This event is the qualifier for the Australian Championships. Good luck to all!

Vermont Sport wishes to acknowledge the contributions of our outgoing year 12 runners Matt V and Maddie H.

Matt was unable to participate in this years EMR and State events due to injury. Matt has been an integral part of the college cross country team over the years, highlights including competing at the Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships in 2022.

Maddie, another incredibly valued team member whose effort and determination over the years has been nothing short of admirable. Always up for a challenge, which paid dividends in this years cross country events as Maddie competed at her first state cross country event.

Thanks to both for being such strong positive role models along your journey. See you on the track for athletics!

SENIOR BOYS FOOTBALL – EMR CHAMPIONS

The senior boys football team successfully defended their EMR title at the recent EMR Football day held at Elgar Park.

Game 1 v Koonung Secondary College

The team were hot out of the gates in their opening match against Koonung. Vermont led 30-0 at half time. The foot was taken off the gas just enough for Koonung to respond with 4 goals 1 to our 2 goals 1, but it was too little too late for the opposition as Vermont were 18 point victors.

Final score 6.7.39 to Koonung 4.1.25

Goal kickers Oscar D 2, Sam H, Jack R, Jai T, Jake M

Game 2 v Norwood Secondary College

The final pool game against Norwood was a must win for the boys. Anything less and the journey would be over.  Again, a strong start saw Vermont lead Norwood 22-8. Norwood stepped up in the second half piling on the forward pressure, kicking 2 goals 3 to our 1 goal. Saved by the siren, the boys were able to withstand the heat from a quality opposition, no doubt the toughest match up of the day.

Final score 4.4.28 to Norwood 3.5.23

Goal kickers Jack W 2, Jai T, Mitch T

Final v Doncaster Secondary College

It was a close and highly contested first half. Doncaster got the jump early with a goal and a number of behinds to which the boys responded to in an outstanding fashion. Jack W kicked two important goals which gave Vermont the lead coming into the break 14-9. The second half saw the flood gates open as the team moved the ball with confidence after an inspirational half time speech from head coach Billings. Vermont ran out comfortable winners with a 36 point margin.

Final score 7.5.45 to Doncaster 1.3.9

Goal kickers Jack W 2, Jai T 2, Lachlan W

The team now progresses to the State Quarter Final which will see them take on Bass Coast College. If successful they will play the semi final against the winner of Catholic College Wodonga and a team from Southern Metropolitan Region (to be confirmed).

Well done all, your coaches Mr Billings and Ms Malander.

SENIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL – EMR RUNNERS UP

The senior girls football team had a successful day out at the EMR football competition finishing runners up in an emphatic final. An impressive turn out from the girls with a 25 player strong squad whilst other schools struggled to field 18 shows how valued the sense of team is amongst this group.

Game 1 v Canterbury Girls

The sun was shining and the energy was high as the team took on their first opposition for the day. Annie C was on fire kicking 3 goals 1 for the game, letting the rest of the competition know that she wasn’t there to muck around! Some strong defensive efforts and fast paced ball movement and leg speed from the mids allowed Vermont to win by a comfortable 20 point margin. Special mention to our rucks Kate M and Jess H with zero ruck experience for giving it their all.

Final score 6.4.40 to Canterbury Girls 20

Goal kickers Annie C 3, Evie P, Jemma K, Tamara A

Game 2 v Brentwood Secondary College

A mark was made in the second and final pool game of the day, as Vermont won convincingly against local rivals Brentwood. Evie P was on fire slotting 3 goals in a single half of football before earning a well deserved rest. The defence once again stood tall with key players Jess D and Sunday D ensured that nothing would get past them. It rained goals, so much so that Ms Malander was too busy celebrating to record all the goal kickers! It was however dampened with an ankle injury to key midfielder Ellie M as she kicked for goal.

Final score 38 to Brentwood 0

Goal kickers Evie P 3, Ellie M, Milli H, Annie C (probably 1)

Final v Box Hill Senior Secondary College

The stage was set for a clash of the titans. Vermont got the jump early with 3 very handy goals (again, coach was too excited to record them down). Box Hill had some great link up handballs and leg speed which looked threatening, but the defence held up strongly as they had done so all day. Vermont came into the break leading the charge and looking the favourites. The second half began and Box Hill came out firing. Our defence was again under the pump, but couldn’t contain the heat that Box Hill were bringing. A strong spirited team effort just fell short as Box Hill were victorious by one straight kick. The journey had come to an end, but the team effort throughout the day could not be faulted especially considering over half of the team don’t play club football.

Goal kickers Niamh B, Kate M, Chelsea P, Annie C.

The team: Ellie M, Milli H, Sienna W, Jemma W, Jess H, Lucy W, Summer S, Amber T, Chelsea P, Jess D, Tamara A, Niamh B, Erin J, Ella C, Olivia G, Amelia L, Jemma K, Sunday D, Brooke P, Kate M, Lydia K, Evie P, Sophie B, Abbey S, Annie C, Stella D.

To the year 12s, it has been an absolute pleasure coaching you in footy over the years at Vermont! To the year 11s, we have a job to do next year, and we are so excited for it!

Special thanks to Tony Jacobs for his assistance with the team.

SPORTING EXCELLENCE

The college wishes to congratulate year 12 student Stella D on her selection in the Australian Indoor Cricket Team. Stella will travel to Dubai in September to compete. An amazing achievement as not many can say they have had the honour to represent their country, let alone whilst in year 12. Stella has been a fantastic contributor to the college sports program over the years. Once again, congratulations, and all the very best!
