Yr 10 Duke of Edinburgh Camp – Mitchell River National Park

The Year 10 Duke of Ed class completed their Adventurous Journey Camp last week trekking through the Mitchell River National Park. The class spent the previous six week undertaking preparations and practicing outdoor skills which were put into practice across three days in tough terrain. Carrying all their own equipment, cooking meals, setting up tents and navigating cold and wet conditions the class trekked over 23kms across the camp with near 1000m elevation gain. With support from camp guide Kelly, Loz, Mr G and Mr Smyth the highlights included sitting by the camp fire, visiting the Den of Nargun, and lots of fun and laughs along the journey as a group. What an amazing effort by the Year 10 Duke of Ed Students!!!

“The Duke of Ed hike to Mitchell River 2022 was an absolute blast! Despite the cold nights, muddy trails and drizzly walks it was a great experience. The group learnt basic skills of the outdoors and challenge themselves to push their limits. Walking approximately 23km on the camp in the sun, the clouds and the rain it was mentally and physically challenging. We got through these three great days as a team and all achieved our goals. Putting up a tent, cooking delicious trangia meals, starting a camp fire and carrying our heavy packs was an experience to say the least. Overall it was a great hike and we all bonded and learnt so much from it!”

“On the Duke of Ed hike I was able to push myself to new limits and even though finishing the hike was a struggle, getting to the end was super rewarding. I also really enjoyed bonding with new people and cooking our meals with friends!”
