Un Jour a Melbourne

Yr.10 excursion to the Shrine & the NGV

Earlier this month, Monsieur Sloane & Madame Moore took their combined Year 10 classes to the city for a day. It was officially the first day of winter but we were blessed with splendid weather. Our first stop was the Shrine of Remembrance, where we investigated the link between Australia and France during both wars but more specifically, the special relationship between

Villers-Bretonneux and Australia.

On the 25th of April 1918, the Anzacs managed to take back the village from the germans and in doing so marked the end of the German offensive on the Somme.

The students enjoyed this historical interlude and Mr. Sloane did a good job of minding our bags as we meander through the living monument dedicated to the memory of all the soldiers who didn’t make it home from the war.

We made our way back to the NGV under a glorious winter’s sun. We were then split in two groups and completed the ‘Bonjour France’ art trail. One of the groups focused on Women artists from various periods whilst the other, had an emphasis on the Impressionists and even managed to do some sketching in the gardens.

It was a real pleasure to take our impeccably behave students out ‘on the town’ for the day. I even received an email from the NGV thanking us for our visit and noting how polite and engaged our students were. But, we knew that already!

Here are a few pics from our excursion:
