Round the classes
Reception class: Katie
The Receptions have been very busy working on discovering the meaning of Reconciliation. We loved doing the activities last week and we learnt lots about the Aboriginal culture.
In literacy, we have been busy continuing to learn our sounds and working on ways to improve our sentence writing. We have also learnt a new strategy that will enable us to write a bit more independently.
In maths, we have been learning about the numbers 7, 8 and 9. We have discovered the different combinations of numbers that can make these numbers. We have also learnt how to represent these numbers in different ways.
As part of our well-being learning with the Kimochis, we have been learning how to be brave like Bug.
Finally, as part of our science learning in class, we have been learning about snails.
Year 1 class: Kelly and Troy
The year one class has been engaged with learning about Reconciliation. Students enjoyed the Monday activities learning about First Nations culture. On Wednesday students were taught Kaurna language by Deanne Hanchant-Nichols. It was a wonderful week celebrating and learning together to have a better understanding of First Nations accomplishments, culture and resilience.
This fortnight in literacy students have been learning about persuasive writing. Students are developing their knowledge of how to use connectives at the beginning of a sentence including the words firstly, secondly and finally. Students celebrated their learning by completing their Big Write on the topic of 'Which season is the best?' It was fantastic to see students choosing a range of seasons and using a wide range of 'wow' words to convince the reader.
In Maths students have been learning about creating and repeating patterns. Students are learning to identify missing components of a pattern and recognise what is the repeating set. They have been using a wide range of materials and are beginning to solve worded questions and draw down the pattern.
Finally, students are getting excited about performing Wombat Stew at the next assembly. Students are working hard learning their lines and making props for the performance.
Year 2 class: Sam and Suzie
Naa marni? (How are you all?)
Over the past two weeks, our class has been engaged in various exciting activities that have both enriched their knowledge and fostered their creativity.
Reconciliation Week was an incredibly meaningful experience for our class. During the assembly, we explored the importance of reconciliation and learned about the rich culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It was a beautiful opportunity to reflect on our shared stories and celebrate the diversity within our school and local community.
During Reconciliation Week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Deanne, a knowledgeable guest speaker who taught us about Karuna culture and language. The students embraced this opportunity to expand their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the Kaurna language. We then shared the new language as part of our assembly.
In mathematics, we have been sharpening our problem-solving skills through addition and subtraction strategies. The students have been actively involved in hands-on activities, encouraging critical thinking and logical reasoning. We are proud of their progress in developing a solid foundation in these fundamental mathematical concepts.
This week we completed our Big Write, focusing on narrative with the theme of imaginary friends. The students showcased their imagination and creativity by incorporating "Ollie Openers" into their writing. Ollie Openers are exciting and descriptive sentence starters that enhance the overall quality of their stories. It was heartwarming to witness their enthusiasm and growth as young writers.
Enjoy your weekend everyone!
Year 2/3 class: Stephen and Henry
We enjoyed our excursion to the aviation museum last week. There were so many things to see and do. A picture paints a thousand words, so see the ones included below.
We got to see vintage and modern airplanes. Some were civilian, some were military. We got to sit inside some of the planes and we also sat inside a helicopter. We didn’t get any frequent flyer points 😊, but we nevertheless had lots of fun there.
In maths, we have started learning about Time with our student teacher, Nicola. We have started using terminology such as half past, quarter to and quarter past. Some of us have also looked at the idea of elapsed time, such as how many hours are there between 9:30am and 1:30pm.
For writing, we have explored the Procedure genre. This involves learning about verbs and adverbs to ensure the correct language is used for this type of genre.
Year 4/5 class: Alex
In Mathematics this fortnight students have been practising using a range of problem-solving strategies to approach multi-step problem-solving tasks. They have been improving at explaining their thinking process when working through a problem and articulating it to their peers.
In literacy, students have been developing their persuasive writing skills by practising brainstorming strong reasons to support their argument. They have been using the OREO paragraph structure to organise their writing so that each paragraph contains their opinion, strong reason, and evidence to back up their reason and then restates their opinion in a convincing way. Students have been monitoring their goals to make sure they are focused on improving either their punctuation or more 'WOW' words.
In Health students have been reflecting on their triggers that can put them in the yellow zone. They have also been thinking about the size of a problem they may encounter and the appropriate size of reaction for particular problems.
Students thoroughly enjoyed celebrating National Reconciliation Week. They particularly enjoyed our full day of activities celebrating Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander culture and history and their session learning Kaurna language with Deanne. Enjoy some photos below of the traditional games and Kaurna language session.
Year 5/6 class: Sallie
Reconciliation week was amazing. We completed lots of relevant put engaging activities to support the idea of coming together and learning new things about our First Nation people.
The Year 6 students had a lot of opportunities for leadership roles last week and a lot of other teachers commented on how well they carried out their roles and responsibilities. We have been focused on really honing in on our narrative goals (and doing lots of work around narratives to prepare for this).
On Friday we have a Big Write and out topic involves "an encounter with an alien". I am looking forward to reading these stories and seeing the great language choices people make. The buzz the around the class for the week prior to the "Big Write" is so inspiring! The Readers Cup team are furiously reading their novels in readiness for our quiz on the 4th of July.
In maths our fraction board games are starting to take shape and an invitation to come and play our board games will be coming out soon.
In geography we looked at some maps of North America and placed some important land marks on the maps.
Our netball tournament is coming up on the 23rd of July and we have had a few practices, and everyone is excited.
PE: Henry
This past fortnight we have started a new unit on lacrosse in PE. All classes have been practising with lacrosse sticks to scoop the ball off the ground, throwing and catching the ball, and playing a variety of games that are designed to improve student stick skills. It's been a lot of fun learning about a new sport with the classes and great to see the kids building confidence in their skills. Alongside lacrosse, the reception class has been developing their fundamental movement skills by doing activities that have them throwing and catching balls of different sizes.
Indonesian: Ibu Susan
In Indonesian the JP classes have been adding simple prepositions of place and numbers to sea creature words to write fantastic descriptions. They have also tried some traditional dancing from Sumatra involving lots of clapping!
The older students have used prepositions of place in translations and descriptions and have also revised their number knowledge with games and activities. Some students can confidently count into the millions!
Science: Troy
In Science we have been learning about the physical properties of matter and how these properties change when heat or cold is added to the object. In the younger years students are creating animals and demonstrating their external features and building habitats to show the needs of that animal. Finally our year two's have been learning about changes we make to physical objects such as stretching, bending, tearing, squashing and more.
