Guinea Pig News

On Wednesday, about 50 kids came into the library over lunch time, to meet, feed, and pat Puggles the Guinea pig!

Puggles used to live at the school but she was rehomed at the end of 2019 with an RPS family. Perfect timing considering COVID hit a few months later. Even though she lives off site, Puggles still belongs to the wider RPS community.

Unfortunately, throughout 2020 and 2021, visits to RPS were fleeting. Every time a visit was organized, we would go into lockdown. It became a bit of a predictor!

Now that things have settled down a bit, Puggles will be visiting RPS more frequently for lunch time pats on Wednesdays.

Puggles also has her own Facebook group. So if your family would like to see what she is up to, then please join the group. She is also available for loans on the school holidays, and weekends. She comes with everything she needs for an overnight stay! There is only one rule for having her stay with your family - If you don’t have an existing dog or cat, then you can have her spend some time with your family. Guinea pigs get stressed with carnivorous pets around, so this is the only rule for when she is loaned out.

And, the Wednesday library visits ensure that all kids can cuddle her, even if they can’t take her home for visits.

Join the FB group to find out more. Please ensure you answer the membership Qs on joining. This is to ensure all group members are associated with the school.

Looking forward to sharing lots of Guinea pig love!

Garden News

Despite the chilly weather things have been skating along in the school garden this term. The new resident chooks are certainly loving all their new visitors and the fresh greens they're getting hand delivered! To help keep up a steady supply to the chooks we've now got some signs in the garden to help you understand which plants are ok for our avian friends to eat, and which plants are not. The bed closest to the chicken pen is currently full of good things for the girls, so if in doubt, that's a safe bet.

In the human department we have a lush crop of fresh coriander coming on, as well as lots of spring onions and leafy greens. Pop by the garden after school on Friday to grab some for a bargain gold coin donation, or join us for a spot of planting, weeding and watering.

At the most recent working bee some hard work was done clearing the compost bays and we made our very first "hot compost". Hot Compost is a great way to quickly - and naturally - break down all the veg scraps from school lunches into beautiful soil to grow more food. A hot compost mixes layers of carbon (dry plant materials) and nitrogen (wet plant materials) along with a dash of manure into a enormous pile. The composting action is so "hot" that the pile was steaming when we last turned it! We'll be turning the pile over the school holidays and if you'd like to help and/or learn more about the power of hot compost join our Whats App here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/EcL9ZLVfzMrCBIsRklsvXo
