Spotlight on our Learners

Year 1

Year 1 had an ‘Art Attack’ last Friday!

The students learnt different attachment techniques and then used what they learnt to create a very colourful mural. The students got to practise their fine motor skills and problem solve.

They all had a wonderful time being creative!

Inquiry Learning in 1B

We have had a surprising inquiry into ‘galls’ this week! William found some leaves at home and asked his mum to take a picture and send it to our class. After looking at the pictures up close on our classroom TV, we contacted an arborist on the topic who also contacted their professional connections. They all agreed and informed us that what William had found was a type of gall. We then inquired what a gall looked like inside, dissected it, and researched a little more using ICT. We learnt that galls are growths on the surface of plants. They are caused by various parasites, fungiinsects and mites

We discovered someone who is an advocate of cecidology, the little known study of plant galls in the UK. We emailed him and he responded! He has provided us a lot of great information and more questions to follow up on our inquiry:

Thanks so much for reaching out to me. Well done William for finding a plant gall! Excellent nature detective work there. I can certainly confirm that you have a gall and that inside those growths will be the larvae of an insect growing and feeding.
