OGPS – Other Great Programs @ School

Star Cats Player

This Wednesday the Grade 5 boys had a visit from star cats player and OGPS dad, Brad Ottens! He talked about challenges in his footy career, the highs and lows as well as his life journey to become who he is today.

Brad was born in a small town in the Northern Territory called Katherine. He didn’t really grow up with footy at all, he occasionally (on the weekends) would drive 4 hours to watch a bit of a VFL match.

Then he moved to Adelaide for boarding school and all his friends supported the Adelaide Football club, but Brad decided to go for the Geelong Cats instead.

When he was 18 years of age he was drafted into the AFL Richmond team as the ruckman. Mainly because he was 2.2 meters tall! His number was 7 in Tigers in case you were wondering. It’s really amazing.

In 2005, Brad was transferred over to Geelong from the Tigers, and it was at that point he told us that he got a lot of rude comments from the media. Then his coach Mark Thompson stepped in and made a public announcement and said to leave him alone. The comment was needed and he had the confidence to say that comment and help Brad Ottens get through the media's rude questions and comments. Confidence is a SEL (social emotional learning) trait that we’re taught at this school.

We are grateful that Brad came and talked to the boys about the challenges of succeeding in a career because there will always be someone who will take the negative side of things.

Thank you Brad! We are looking forward to our next role models ‘MacChat’ in a couple of weeks.
