Science Week at

Kildare Catholic College

Kildare was visited by Dr Brad Tucker (Astrophysicist and Cosmologist) and Mr Peter Swanton (Indigenous Astronomer with ANU)

As part of Science Week we hosted a visit by Dr Brad Tucker (Astrophysicist and Cosmologist) and Mr Peter Swanton (Indigenous Astronomer with ANU)  as part of the Scientists Taking Astronomy to Regional Schools (STARS) program which is jointly funded by ANU and the Australian Government.

Students completing Year 11 and 12 Physics, and two available Year 10 classes were invited to attend the sessions which covered the use of spectroscopy to gain an understanding of our universe and its origins. We also gained insight into Aboriginal knowledge of the stars that has been passed down through traditional stories and practices.

As part of the visit, Kildare received an 8” Dobsonian Telescope, a solar filter and a smartphone adapter to assist with Astrophotography opportunities and Star gazing events. The visit was well timed as the theme for Science Week is glass. The use of glass in lenses has transformed our ability to understand the universe around us from the microscopic to the depths of space. We also highlighted the use of glass as optic fibres and in our screens which has revolutionised our ability to communicate and use cutting-edge technology every day.
