Humanities And Social Sciences & Health

We wonder how we can be healthy and safe. We wonder about our personal histories, our world and places we visit.

Health

Term 2 was all about learning to making healthy choices. The Wiggles inspired and informed us through our unit of inquiry called Ready, Set, Wiggle, How to be Healthy. The topics we covered were:

  • Feelings
  • Relaxation and Mindfulness
  • Healthy Eating
  • Hydration
  • Being Active
  • Being Sun Smart

History

This term, we will be looking at the History strand of the Australian Curriculum. Students will be focussing on ‘What is my history and how do I know?’ There are many big ideas that will be covered throughout the unit, some include:

* Understanding that everyone belongs to a family, however these families, their structures and experiences may differ.

* How families are similar and different.

* Life events happen in a sequence (order).

This unit will allow students to ask questions about the past, explore and compare a range of sources (including magazine, photos, drawings, books) and to add simple historical terms about the past and present to their expanding vocabularies.

The unit will encourage students to develop a personal understanding of who is in their family and how each of them are related.  Students will be engaging with their families and exploring their own family story. We would love it if you could talk to your child about their history and their family to get them thinking about their past.

Geography

Later on in the Semester we will be looking at Geography and focussing on the world around us.

We will look at the following questions-

What are places like?

What makes a place special?

How can we look after the places we live in?

Through our studies in Geography, students will explore the place they live in and belong to, learn to observe and describe its features, and why it is important to them. They will explore their own special places, how they feel about them, what makes them special, and how they can care for them.

Child Protection Curriculum

It is the DfE requirement that every year the child protection curriculum is taught in schools. The two main themes of the curriculum are ‘we all have the right to be safe’ and ‘we can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust’. The topics we will cover this semester will include: ‘the right to be safe’, ‘relationships’, ‘recognising and reporting abuse’ and ‘protective strategies’. If you require further clarification of the DfE ‘Keeping safe child protection curriculum’ please visit the DfE website.

In This Together

This year we have had a special focus on Indigenous Perspectives through sharing Dreaming stories, songs and learning some Kaurna words. Every morning we sing a song about caring for our country and everyone and everything whilst striving to be the best that we can be. This has been a very lovely way to promote care and compassion for all and acknowledge the traditional custodians of our land, the Kaurna people.  The words we have been focussing on are body parts, greetings and colours.
