Science / German / PE

We are confident when we try new things and have new experiences. We love learning about the world around us and persist to improve our skills.

Science

In Science, learning through experience is at the core of teaching with students encouraged to interact, describe and share learning. A significant focus is to provide opportunities for students to learn through discovery – participating in purposefully designed activities. Learning has been designed to spark curiosity and provide students with skills to develop questioning by communicating and sharing observations and ideas.

Students are given opportunities to collaborate within a group situation in order to build the skills to value the contribution of others, as well as be confident to share their own ideas and opinions. They are encouraged to try new ways of learning by undertaking a range of investigations by recording and sharing observations and findings.

The focus for Term 3 is observing and describing the characteristics of a selection of living things and that they have basic needs, including food and water. Students will be exploring through a range of engaging, hands on inquiry experiences. This topic fits into the Biological Sciences strand of the Australian Curriculum and develops their scientific thinking and critical and creative thinking skills.

Linking with the Australian Curriculum strand of Biological Sciences, students will have the opportunity to predict, observe and question to then share conclusions and observations.

In Term 4, we will be exploring earth and space sciences where students are encouraged to inquire into the world around them and beyond. We will start the term by looking into weather patterns. This will then be leading into an inquiry into our local environment and how the weather affects everyday life.

Each class has two Science lessons per week. This Semester Science is as follows:

R8 has a double Science lesson  on Thursdays between Recess and lunch with Richard Barwa.

R9 has a double Science lesson  on Thursdays between Recess and lunch with Mirjana Faccin.

German

We concluded first semester with a special celebration and distribution of Schultüten to all of our Reception students.  This is a typical gift given to children in Germany on their first day of school.  We proudly follow this tradition at LNPS. Our Year 6 Senior students worked hard in their German lessons with Frau Chesterman to create unique Schultüten and were excited to finally give them to their  Reception buddies.

In our weekly German lessons, Reception students use language in context through familiar routines, games, songs and repetition. They exchange greetings and information making connections between English and German.  Students interact with peers through action-related talk and play and in routine exchanges such as  responding to the class roll. They play simple games to reinforce vocabulary knowing that repetition builds confidence. Question and response plays a big part in developing dialogue between both teacher and student as well as between peers.   Each lesson provides opportunities for students to listen and respond. They also participate in guided activities such as songs, rhymes and games to reinforce vocabulary using simple repetitive language. Oral interaction continues to play a large part in every lesson. Encouraging everyone to have a go and to participate to progress.

Students can respond to greetings in German, count to ten and state their age, they are beginning to identify colours to describe and also name items in the classroom.

This semester we will further develop our understanding of German as another language, continuing to look at the world and recognise where we are and that other languages are spoken in different places.

Talk to your child about the language learning experiences you have had. Some of our students are fortunate to already have several languages as part of their every day lives.   This is such a rich literacy experience and enables them to make connections.  Please encourage your child to share with you something they have learned or tell you what they can say in German.  See what they can teach you!

Each class has one German lesson per week. German lessons are on the following days.  R8 Montag (Monday)and R9 Dienstag (Tuesday)

PE

Physical Education continues to support the whole child, fostering their physical, social, emotional, creative and cognitive self.

A highlight from last semester was the Jump Rope for Heart program. Children enjoyed learning new skipping skills and routines and worked their way through the progressions at their own level. It was great to see everyone skipping in their break times, in class and before and after school.

Premier's Be Active Challenge

This term children will have the opportunity to participate in the 4 week Premier's Be Active Challengecommencing in week 4 and concluding in week 7.

The Premier’s Be Active Challenge encourages children to be more active more often and improve the health and well being of all Australian students. It’s a great time to be inspired to be active with the Commonwealth Games in full flight and whole school swimming in week 7.

Your child will be bringing home a Premier's Be Active booklet at the end of week 3. Children are encouraged to keep track of their daily physical activity and it’s recommended that they aim to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day. After the completion of the 4 week challenge families are to validate their child’s physical activity with a signature and return the form to their class teacher.

At the end of the challenge all participants will be rewarded with a medal, which will be awarded in November.

It is hoped that all students get on board and participate in this great initiative. All forms must be returned by Monday 12/9 week 8.

This semester, children will continue to develop and refine fundamental movement skills such as dodging, rolling and running through cooperative games and skill based activities. Children will know the learning intention of each lesson and co construct the success criteria to be successful. At the end of each lesson children are given the opportunity to reflect on how they are tracking, what their strengths are and next steps for improvement. Children will continue to use decision-making and problem-solving skills when solving movement tasks safely, learning to follow basic game rules successfully. Using the teaching personal and social responsibility model, children will learn life and social skills during physical activities with a strong focus on self direction and leadership.

Sports Day

Sports Day will be held in term 4, enabling children to develop sportsmanship skills and build confidence in their physical abilities. They will be practising tabloid events in PE lessons in the lead up to the day. Children will also have the opportunity to try out for championship sprints, which will be run-off during the school day. The fastest 2 children from Malurus, Grallina, Brian and Pierson in year levels R-6 will be chosen to participate in the championship sprints on Sports Day. More information will be advertised in the school newsletter closer to the event.

Students are reminded to wear suitable clothing and footwear to all PE lessons to ensure their full participation.
