Sport News

WOW!  What a range of sports and successes we have had over the past few weeks! Where to begin…

SWIMMING:

Congratulations to all our VBC swimmers who went to state last week.

Our swimmers were:

  • Emi McCrohan (3rd in 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle)
  • Cameron McLeod (3rd 50 butterfly, 2nd in 50 backstroke, 1st senior relay)
  • Dylan Zipsin (100m butterlyfly 1st, 4th in 100 freestyles, 1st in senior relay)
  • Jannik Hyland (1st in 100 backstroke, 2nd in 50 butterfly, 2nd in 50 freestyle, 1st in senior relay)
  • Alex Chang (5th in 50 breaststroke, 7th in 50 freestyle, 7th in 50 backstroke)
  • Kyle Yi Chang (1st senior relay).

Our 14 boys relay team also came 6th, and our 16 boys relay team also came 7th.

Volleyball

On the 23/04, the Intermediate Boys travelled to the Darebin Sports Centre where they battled against other schools for the Volleyball title.  Despite our valient efforts, the boys fell short of the title, but definetly did their school proud.  With 1 win under the belt, the boys will be ready for future competitions where they will bring Viewbank a championship ribbon.

Intermediate Baseball

On the 22/04, Intermediate Boys participated in the second round of Baseball where they tried their best to achieve victory.  Despite falling short, the boys put up an amazing fight, and will return to the competition arena another time.

Softball

At the Northern Zone competition, our intermediate girls came runners up. This means that they are also adding to the wall of rotating pennants in the gym foyer - this is always worth a look to see how strong Viewbank’s sporting teams are, in a range of competitions!

Tennis: Inter boys won their Northern Zone competition, which then puts them through to the State Final!  Excellent job!

This week we also had sports out across a range of divisions.

Intermediate Boys Soccer, Girls Netball and Boys/Girls Badminton all went out on Wednesday and won through.

The Year 8 Boys Tennis also won their day and went through to State - we wish them well!

On Tuesday the Year 8 girls came runners up in Softball, and the boys team were unfortunately beaten overall.

Oh, and have we spoken about our staff member Mr Luke Gazzola?

Mr Gazzola entered into the Victorian State Weightlifting Championships on the weekend, in the 96kg weight division.

After lifting 120kg in the snatch and 158 in clean and jerk, Mr. Gazzola went on to WIN the competition, putting him as the current state champion for his age, and placed well for his upcoming Australian Championships at the end of Term 3.

And don’t forget about the Wilson sisters, Eva and Freya.

At the recent Nationals in Athletics, Eva came 5th in the U16 female hammer, while Freya achieved 15th in U14 discus and 16th in U14 hammer.

These are amazing results when you think about how many people across Australia do Athletics.

There are a few photos of the girls in action in this article, along with their coach Steve Cain.

Won a state title?  Even competed in something above and beyond normal club competitions? WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT!  Email your child’s results (and photos!) through to either Mr. Gazzola or Mr. Purcell and we will get them in the newsletter.  Achievements should be shared!

Senior Tennis

Both the Senior Boys and Girls Tennis teams competed in the Northern Metro Region Competition at Boroondara Tennis Centre in the final week of Term 1.

The girls team consisted of Jennifer Ou, Emma Parfitt, Tarnie Jones, Sylvia Lai, Grace Heaver. The girls were competitive in their pool, achieving runners up overall for the competition.

The boys team consisted of Nicholas Jovanovski, Jai Vidinopoulos, Samuel Madrigale & Chris Thorp. The boys were dominant in their pool, progressing to the finals. The team defeated University High in the NMR final and will be moving through to the State competition this term. Congratulations and good luck for the next round!

All students are commended on their efforts and teamwork on the day.

Intermediate Tennis

Viewbank’s Intermediate Tennis Teams for both Boys and Girls qualified for the Northern Metro Regional stage of schools competition, which was held at Boroondara Tennis Complex on 23rd April.

In the pool stage on the day, our Girls Team had two excellent victories over Mill Park and Coburg, before a competitive loss against a very strong Lalor team, meaning that we narrowly missed out on progressing to the regional final. A highlight of the day was Ann Benny and Neha Hiremani’s thrilling victory in the last doubles of Match 2, which gave us a victory over Coburg. Well done to all the team for qualifying for regionals and for the excellent level of tennis they demonstrated throughout the day.

Intermediate Girls:

  • Georgia Scrutton
  • Asma Saly
  • Clare Parfitt
  • Neha Hiremani
  • Ann Benny
  • Olivia Phillips

Our Boys Teams won their pool stage with convincing wins over Coburg and Epping. In the regional final, the boys played the winner of the other pool, Princes Hill. Despite the fact that several sets were extremely close, Viewbank managed to win the vital points and remain composed in the important moments, leading to a comprehensive 6 sets to 0 victory. Congratulations to our Boys Team, who now proceed through to the State finals.

Intermediate Boys:
