Lions club debating competition

This year James Roseman-Gannon, Alice Brown, Louka Pocock and Greta Bush represented Northcote High School in the annual Lions Club debate. This competition is a four context between Northcote High School, Our Lady of Mercy, Santa Maria and Thornbury High School. It is a knock out competition and $750 goes to each of the schools knocked out in the first round. The winner will receive $1,500 and runner up $1,000.

Northcote High School was successful in the opening round arguing against Thornbury High School that liberties should be traded for security and stability. We argued that the idea of the social contract meant that trading liberties was not a bad thing. Our opponents were worried that we might become a controlled society like China or lose our privacy like in the United States. In the end we won and that’s all that counts!

The final will be held at the Olympic Hotel in Preston and we will be arguing that we should not set a target to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030. Thanks to the Northcote Lions Club for their support of local schools through the debating competition over the last twenty-five years. Hope to see you there!
