Farmbot at LIHS

Farmbot is a robotic open hardware system that assists anyone with a small plot of land and a desire to grow food with planting, watering, soil testing, and weeding. Watch the video below to learn more about robotic farming.

Year 12 Construction and Metals and Engineering students, Agriculture classes, and more, as well as a few amazing teachers from our school: Mr Cohen, Mrs Atkinson, and Mrs Bartlett, and more, have all been working hard on this amazing opportunity for our school. They are currently building the Farmbot and the area it will be placed in the Ag Plot. Take a look at these amazing photos!

There will be more updates to come.

Multicultural Cook Off

Article composed by: Tori Henderson (Year 8) and Emily Turner (Year 8)

Additional News Team participant on the day: Chae Conte (Year 8)

This year, Year 10 had the opportunity to participate in the multicultural Cook Off. The event took place over many weeks. During the first week, the Year 10 Food Technology class formed 5 teams and were paired with a volunteer and culture. The 5 cultures were Indian, Portuguese, Spanish, Peruvian, and Turkish. During the second week, the teams researched with the volunteers and created their menus for the big day.

During the Cook Off day, the students made their food and prepared to present it to the staff of LIHS and multiple guests, including the Mayor of Shellharbour: Marianne Saliba. They cooked some delicious things like Spanish paella and Portuguese tarts - just to name a few.

Our school partners with the Multicultural Communities Council of the Illawarra, or the MCCI, every year to make this event happen. As well as the Shellharbour club who grants and supports this movement.

Community Breakfast

Reporters: Tori Henderson (Year 8) and Gracie Francis (Year 8)

The Student News Team were invited to the LIHS Community Breakfast. The breakfast was held at Lake Illawarra High School and was in our brand new STEM room, called the Jubborsay Learning Hub. The Jubborsay Learning Hub was built by our own Construction students in Year 11 and 12 last year, under the guidance of Mr Cohen.

Mrs Willingham ran the breakfast and had invited important industry representatives from around the Illawarra. Mr Chaseling and Mrs Stephens helped make the morning event happen, as well as our LIHS SRC and Hospitality representatives.

Make sure you watch the video below, showing you how the breakfast was organised!

International Women's Day Seminar

Reporter: Tori Henderson (Year 8)

On the 12th of March, select girls from year 7 - 12 were invited to participate in an International Women's Day seminar. The girls heard from ex-student Michelle Toms, who spoke to the girls about hard decisions they will have to make in their lives, but that there are many positive outcomes for persevering. She stated that there would be challenges in our lives, but overcoming obstacles develop our strength and resilience. Our greatest strength is within ourselves and we should not be afraid of taking risks or challenging ourselves.

The girls then heard from local female Neuroscientist, Ms Diana Karamacoska. Through several activities, Diana encouraged the girls to look within themselves and identify the qualities that make us all unique but connected at the same time. The girls enjoyed composing positive affirmations for their group mates and it was a very meaningful seminar.

The girls then enjoyed morning tea and had the chance to ask our guest speakers questions about their lives and journey to becoming successful women. It is important to support the strong female figures in your life and let them know that they are appreciated. The event was prepared by Ms Nicholson and Ms McLoughlin with the assistance of Mrs Cormack and Mrs Stephens for the amazing catering.

Science with Cayden

Journalist: Cayden Dawson (Year 8)

What is a black hole?

A black hole is a hyper-dense region of interstellar space categorised by its incredible gravity and dark colour- in other words, anything goes into black holes- they die. Black holes = death.

If I went into one, what would happen?

There are two kinds of black holes, spinning and non-spinning. In a non-spinning black hole, you would be sucked in past the event horizon and eventually die. Spinning black holes have a special element to them, the ergosphere, a less dense region of space where escape is possible. Sadly, if you have gone too far, you suffer the same fate, a slow, painful death. In other words..black holes still bad- no travel into one.

Why are there people saying the Earth is flat? Do they know something we don’t?

No, despite the innumerable amount of proof surrounding the shape of the Earth, flat earthers consistently deny this hard evidence with “never before seen” evidence pointing the other way. In other words, not very smart people - the Earth is round. I heard something landed on Mars recently- what was it? NASA has recently landed a new rover on Mars, part of the Mars 2020 project, the rover was launched mid-last year from Earth and has touched down on the surface of mars quite recently. The rover's job is to scout the Martian landscape for habitable locations for human settlement. In other words, big robot land to see if humans can build a nice house on Mars.

Why do Mentos in coke make it launch like a rocket?

As the Mentos sinks in the bottle, the candy causes the production of more and more carbon dioxide bubbles, and the rising bubbles react with carbon dioxide that is still dissolved in the soda to cause more carbon dioxide to be freed and create even more bubbles, resulting in the eruption. In other words, Mentos fizz, big explosion, lots of fun- great prank! Kaboom.

Until next time!

Cayden.
