The Careers Expo will have two distinct areas. The first will include over 35 different career and pathway providers. These include all the Universities in Sydney, and some rural ones, as well as TAFE NSW and Universities Admission Centre (UAC). Along with these tertiary educational providers, there will be a host of other varied providers such as:

  • Microsoft
  • Crown Resorts
  • Essential Services providers (Defence, Police and Paramedics)
  • Career website providers (The Careers Department and High School to Hireable)

  • Interactive displays (Microsoft, Yamaha Drone, Robotic displays and 3D printing)

The second area will be specifically designed breakout sessions. These sessions have been developed to provide both practical and tailored opportunities for students and parents to gain valuable information and skills regarding careers, work and industries.

Agriculture

Term 1 was very busy for the Agriculture department. Year 9 raised meat birds from day olds through to processing. The boys enjoyed working with the meat birds and then consuming them. A real paddock to plate experience.

Year 9 have also been breaking and working with two Murray Grey steers. These steers are part of the South Coast Steer Competition. We have partnered with Cadfor Murray Greys, owned by Mr Rod Hoare, an old boy of the College. The steers will be judged on 5 May 2021.

Year 9 have been practising their leading and junior judging skills as part of the whole competition. We wish the team luck at the event in Nowra.

Year 10 harvested and processed their grapes. A small amount of wine was produced. Another paddock to plate experience, just with no taste testing. Year 10 also planted Chrysanthemums, in hope we could produce flowers for Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, the significant rain we had, meant the flowers have not grown and now plan B will be implemented. That is farming for you!

The Senior classes, Year 11 went on a farm case study to a dairy at Camden. They enjoyed learning all about the property and their business. Year 12 attended a local turkey farm to have a look at growth rates, technology and animal welfare. They also used the meat birds to look at growth rates and feed conversion rates. They have planted their crop trial and attended an HSC day at Barker College. They are in full HSC preparation!

We have also seen the arrival of our new teaching and learning tractor. A Kobata, with rotary and slasher. The students have been learning to operate it. The tractor has already come in handy for sowing preparation.
