Introducing our Music Tutors

ROHAN DISLEY – CLASSICAL GUITAR TUTOR

Rohan Disley is a classical and finger-style guitar performer and tutor, based in Perth and the South-West. In 2017 he completed his Bachelor of Arts majoring in Music Studies and Specialist Music Studies at the University of Western Australia, achieving first class honours. He commenced postgraduate studies for a Master of Music in 2019 and received an Australian Government Research Training Scholarship and Stipend. As a performer, Rohan has recorded and toured extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, performing locally and across Australia in tours, on radio and, in 2018, as a semi-finalist in the Melbourne International Guitar Festival competition. He has taught guitar for nine years, tutoring in numerous schools. He is very passionate about the lifelong benefits that his students can develop through guitar lessons, such as independent learning strategies, social skills through communal music-making and presentation skills developed through performance. Rohan wishes to continue his performance and tutoring career in Perth and feels particularly privileged to work in the wonderful Music Department of All Saints’ College.

How did you first get into music?

My middle name is Murray, so I was super into The Wiggles as a child and wanted to play the guitar like Murray! I begged my parents to get me a guitar from when I was four, and they finally did when I was seven.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m from Dunsborough and I love the beaches there. Unfortunately, I don't get down as much as I'd like to, but I always feel at home once I hit the water.

What has been the highlight of your music career so far?

Being able to tour interstate! Playing to a capacity crowd in Melbourne was particularly exciting.

If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why?

There's a great Perth classical guitarist, now living in Germany, called Stephanie Jones. I’d love to play alongside her in an ensemble just to witness her virtuosity in the flesh.

What is your favourite movie?

For some reason I can’t watch movies, they send me to sleep! I do love some horror movies though, such as Get Out.

Mr Disley teaches Classical Guitar on Thursdays at the College. Please contact the Music Department to enquire about lessons on music@allsaints.wa.edu.au.

Afternoon Tea Concerts 2020

PIANO

On Monday, 3 August, we were blessed with a stunning piano recital from Ms Julia Koh’s students as part of the Afternoon Tea Concert Series. This concert featured students from Kindergarten to Year 12, performing various pieces they have been working on throughout the year.

Despite the restrictions imposed by COVID-19, this concert proved to be beneficial to many students. The limitations on space meant there was a smaller, more comfortable audience, which allowed many students to emerge from their shells and perform at ease. Moreover, this performance opportunity served as motivation for many students, who practised hard so that they were able to challenge themselves and perform a high-level work with confidence.

We are so proud of all the students for their efforts and enthusiasm towards this Afternoon Tea Concert. They have all made immense progress and took on this concert with determination and vigour. We are excited to see what the rest of the year holds for these brilliant students!

VIOLIN

Mrs Thea Kotzé’s Afternoon Tea Concert was held on Monday, 3 August in the All Saints' College Chapel. It happened to be on the coldest winter’s day so far this year; however, the sincere and focused performances soon gave a warm glow to the hearts of the appreciative audience. The concert concluded with a delicious afternoon tea. All Mrs Kotzé’s Violin students are warmly congratulated on their performances.

VIOLIN

Miss Runa Murase’s Violin Afternoon Tea Concert was held on 5 August in the All Saints’ College Chapel, performed by talented and enthusiastic students.

We had a range of students from Pre-Primary to Year 8 perform in front of their friends and family. Ranging from Classical to Contemporary music, a bit of Jazz and Folk, and ending the concert with some tango, the afternoon was filled with much excitement.

I would like to thank all the students who performed at the concert, their parents and friends for giving them full support and all the staff in the Music Department. Thank you to Joy Wu (Year 12), Joy Heng (Year 11) and Mr David Harries (Director of Music) for accompanying these amazing students!

VIOLA AND VIOLIN

Last Tuesday, 11 August, the Afternoon Tea Concert series presented a wonderfully varied concert by Viola and Violin students of Mrs Heidi Rix. The students were all well prepared and played beautifully in the All Saints' College Chapel!

Twenty-four students – ranging from beginners in Year 3 and Year 5 to more advanced Junior and Senior School students – played solos. The concert concluded with a delightful Year 4 trio playing Frère Jacques.

Repertoire included traditional pieces such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb and What Shall We Do with The Drunken Sailor, and also works by Mozart, Corelli and Bach.

Students were presented with certificates in acknowledgement of their progress.

It was lovely that younger students had the opportunity to be inspired by hearing the more advanced students perform.

Thanks to Mrs Rosemary Jose for her expert Piano accompaniment and to Director of Music Mr David Harries and the Music Administration for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to perform.

We enjoyed a well-earned Afternoon Tea afterwards. Thanks to the parents for providing some lovely treats and for encouraging the students to work so hard!

CLARINET

On 13 August, as part of the Afternoon Tea Concert series, friends and family of the All Saints’ community were treated to a diverse and engaging music program starring the clarinets. Under the direction of Ms Claire Janiec and held in the beautifully resonate Chapel, students performed in a variety of groupings; from solo, accompanied by piano,  duets, quartets and also our intermediate and senior clarinet ensembles.

The Afternoon Tea Concert was a wonderful opportunity for clarinet students to showcase their efforts this year, with all students putting in significant time and energy into their concert preparation. Many younger students shined in their first performances and there were several captivating and standout performances by players preparing for upcoming Australian Music Exams. As a result, the concert was very well received and much praise and positive response received from the audience in the post-concert afternoon tea. All students are congratulated on their performances and special appreciation extended to Ms Jose for accompaniment and the sizeable audience who supported them in this experience.
