Ensemble Alterations and Cancellations

As a result of the recent restrictions by the NSW Government on music co-curricular activities in schools, we have had to make many changes to our timetable which was emailed out to parents last week and is posted on the Junior Music and Performing Arts Frog page.

As a department, we have very much enjoyed being able to rehearse together this term. It has been wonderful to hear music in the corridors of the department again and to watch the exuberance with which our students have interacted in their ensembles. Of course, we are extremely disappointed that we can’t continue our ensembles but have made every effort to try and accommodate as many musicians and dancers as we possibly can, whilst working within the restriction guidelines.

Dance

A big congratulations to our Year 6 dancers who have been involved in a 3-week dance program with Sydney Dance Company learning the basics of hip-hop, jazz theatre and finger tutting. Despite many not having had formal lessons before, the dance tutors from Sydney Dance were incredibly impressed with their enthusiasm and dedication. The girls enjoyed the routine so much that they have decided to keep working on it to finesse it for performance later this term. Watch this space!

Girl Power String Trip!

At the end of Term 2, three of Mrs Moxey’s Year 2 violin students approached her about forming a trio together. Mrs Moxey agreed, saying that they had to come up with a name for the group and Mrs Moxey would write them their very own piece. At the start of Term 3, “Girl Power” was formed consisting of Grace Lowther, Georgiana Saran and Harper Purvis. They are learning a special piece called “March of the Bananas”. They can be heard rehearsing and working hard every Wednesday at lunchtime with Mrs Moxey in the Music Centre and are learning many important ensemble skills in the process.

Bucket Drumming

Our boys’ percussion group were lucky to get a workshop with contemporary music specialist Mr Seb Key from the Senior School this week. The boys were taken through several drumming drills to improve their coordination, stick technique and listening skills. We are hopeful that Mr Key will join us again and continue to share his expertise.

The boys have been working hard on a bucket routine that they have written themselves with a little help along the way. All that remains now is to name the piece!

“Know your ABCs” Concert: Thursday 20 August

Last Thursday was the first of Mrs Moxey’s “Know your ABCs” concerts. Every year in the lead up to her students AMEB examinations, Mrs Moxey’s students have the opportunity to perform their List A, B or C in these concerts. It took on a very different look this COVID year as students performed in stages to each other and parents were unable to attend. Instead parents were sent videos of their child’s performance so that they didn’t miss out.

Mrs Moxey was very proud of every child’s performance and is looking forward to Weeks 7 and 9 when even more students will perform.
