Year 8 Market Day

On Wednesday of Week 5, Year 8 Commerce students showcased their entrepreneurial skills and put their classroom learnings into practice during the Year 8 Market Day. Twenty-five stalls, each run by a group of 4 or 5 boys, sold soft drinks, Zooper Doopers, bags of lollies, doughnuts and garlic bread to the rest of the school. In the weeks leading up to the day, boys examined how economic concepts of supply and demand would play out on the day, and planned the financial, operational and marketing aspects of their venture. Each group projected and reported on their expected and actual revenue, expenses and profit and developed their teamwork skills in both the planning for and execution of the stalls.

The day was a success, to say the least, with all stalls selling out – some in record time. All stalls made a profit, with total takings across the 5 Commerce classes equalling just over $1900. The profits from the day will be put towards the purchase of gift vouchers to be included in the Marist Christmas Mission Appeal hampers in Term 4.

The day resulted not only in profits but an extremely valuable (and enjoyable) practical learning experience for our businessmen and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.  Here is what some of the boys had to say about the day:

  • “The market day was a very fun way to learn about marketing and all the aspects that go into creating and running a business.”
  • “The experience was useful to understand on a deeper level what we are learning in class in a practical environment.”
  • “I learnt things about business, dealing with problems and improvising around them, and trading to make more profit. We sold all our product, showing how successful we were due to our planning and preparation.”
