CAPA News
Term 3 in CAPA has been a fantastically creative term for all of the arts here at Henry Kendall High School. Despite the massive changes that have occurred throughout the year because of COVID, the resilience and perseverance of both students and teachers has been reflected in the high quality of Performances, Individual Projects and Bodies of Work.
The diversity of performances in Music 1 HSC provided examples of Classical and Electric Guitar, Voice and Jazz, Piano classics and Pop tunes from the ages. Visual Art and Photography displayed the full range of media from layered images, photoshop and digital manipulation, evolution of expressive forms and collections of works. Drama, while missing our vital Group Performances, still demonstrated the creative process of students who submitted Digital Media, Individual Performance and Costume and Set Design.
We finally had a fantastic performance opportunity for the RUOK day with many of our music students from all the years performing on the steps of the Cola to the whole school. The feel of the whole school was overwhelmingly positive enjoying a range of different performing and musical styles.
Romeo and Juliet
Stage 5 Drama class performed Romeo and Juliet for their drama assessment during week 10. They held their performance in the COLA and the rest of the CAPA students loved being the audience.
Here in the CAPA department we are really looking forward to Term 4 with hopefully what will be a new range of performance and exhibiting opportunities that we have sadly missed in the first part of this year.

Science Faculty Newsletter Report Term 3 2020
Another busy term and we have had some definite highlights. Week 5 was National Science Week. The theme for this year was ‘Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans which hoped to develop student’s appreciation of the importance of looking after our oceans so that they are healthy for the years to come. Science students completed a series of challenges in their classes to celebrate this special week.
Year 7 and 8 YAP students complete an Escape Room that focused on challenges around water. The students were very engaged and competitive. The winning team for Year 7 YAP was Zane Austin-Young, Angus Potter and Issac He. The winning team for Year 8 YAP was Evan Morton, Jake Harrison and Jet Wong.
Year 8 students completed the Marshmallow challenge where they had 20 minutes to build the tallest tower out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1m of tape and 1m of string. The tower had to be able to support a marshmallow on top. The students did a great job, with some students managing to build towers nearly 80cm high.
Year 9 had to construct a parachute from a garbage bag, 3m of string, a styrofoam cup and tape that can safely land with 50 ml of water. Congratulations to all the winners and those who participated in the challenges.
Year 10 students competed in groups to make a model of a roller coaster with 2m of rubber tubing attached to a large peg board and a marble. The winning group was the roller coaster design where the marble travelled the shortest distance after exiting the tubing. Students had to use their knowledge of kinetic and potential energy to meet the criteria.
This term Stage 5 Agriculture students worked on their plant trial practical task which they missed during the online learning. Each group got a garden bed where they planted seeds, then monitored and took care of the plant at different stages of its growth.
In this they learned to:
- Investigate the interaction between plant and factors such as water, sunlight, fertilisers and soil density.
- Spread the mulch to reduce the growth of weeds.
- Interpret the seed packet.
- Plant seeds.
- Monitor, water and fertilise the plant accordingly.
- Remove weeds with appropriate equipment, materials and tools.
- Test the soil density in their garden bed.
- Determine how compost is used and at what stages of plant growth it can be used
Students are now excited to do the harvesting.
Year 11 Biology students have been completing dissections this term, allowing them to visually see the structure of organs and organisation of tissues within living things that ensure they carry out their necessary functions.
The Science Faculty wish Year 12 all the best with their HSC Exams and a reminder that some courses have revision sessions during the holidays. Students need to see their teachers for individual course details.
In honour of Chemistry, students have been studying this term.
