RUOK? Day - There’s more to say after RUOK?

On Thursday 10 September, our school celebrated RUOK Day, a day dedicated to looking after and checking up on others who don’t seem to be okay. This year’s theme was ‘There’s more to say after RUOK?’, and in the morning we used chalk to write ‘RUOK?’ and the theme on the stairs in the library quad, creating a fun and colourful display.

The library also put on a visual display in the foyer window, with posters and yellow items along with the 4-steps to a meaningful conversation in speech bubbles. In Roll Call, we watched a video on the 4-steps, as well as what to ask/say if someone’s not okay.

Then, at break, there was a music concert in the library quad whilst we had free hot chocolates and yellow RUOK day cupcakes made by the canteen for $2. The hot chocolates (made by SRC seniors) were accompanied with a yellow card with the 4-steps and other RUOK Day information. We also got an extra half-hour of break, which was really fun as we didn’t have to rush the concert.

Altogether, the RUOK Day celebration was a great success, as most of the school was able to come together and have fun with our friends, creating a happy and accepting atmosphere.

Kibble Park Redesign 2021

On Tuesday 22 September, 16 students visited Kibble Park to consult with landscape architects and local Gosford City Council representatives, on the future plans for Kibble Park. All students walked around the park and talked about positive and negative future/current factors that contribute to the environment of the park. We projected our ideas visually as well as verbally through photographs along with suggestive ideas to the council and developers, these included what we thought were good attributes of the park and what we thought could improve. For example, creating a more natural space using native plants, improving and expanding the water play area by not only making it larger but encompassing the indigenous cultural heritage of the local area.

It was an extremely successful day with students working productively together. We combined ideas to insure that the future of Kibble Park is sustainable, inviting and accessible to all members of the community.

The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy

The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) is currently in the process of developing minimum standards for the management of anaphylaxis in schools across Australia. They would like to engage with parents/guardians of children with severe allergies in an online survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify key issues in anaphylaxis management in the school setting. The survey for parents can be accessed via the National Allergy Strategy School and ECEC Project website.

We are currently updating all health care plans. Students are being interviewed and Individual Heath Care Plans, Risk Management Plans and ASCIA plans are being sent home with students for parent feedback, changes and signatures. All students with ASCIA plans for anaphylaxis or allergies need to be completed by a doctor and have EpiPen’s updated. Could parents make sure students return all plans to Students Services on completion? Thank you!

Over the last few weeks Ms Sasha Fitzgerald, the Year 12 Adviser, has been supporting her cohort extensively as they prepare to leave the Henry Kendall High School fold. We are extremely proud of Year 12 achievements, especially those students who have overcome personal difficulties in the last 12 months and have shown perseverance to complete their studies. Remember, Student Services is always here to support every student until the very last exam if assistance is needed.

On a final note we have a few staff changes for next term. Sadly we say farewell to Carol Sparks, one of our hardworking SLSO’s. Carol is celebrating 25 years of service to Public Education and is now retiring. We wish her all the best for her future adventures and extend our thanks for the support she has offered Henry Kendall High School students.

Sareena Rettenmund will be joining us as an SLSO every Monday. She will be working predominately in our Year 7 classrooms. Sareena is currently studying PDHPE and Aboriginal Studies at university and will be a great asset to our team.
