Year 5

Victorian Maths Challenge Project

Each Friday the Year 5 students have been completing Victorian Maths Challenge projects.

The Eureka challenge asked students to Collect as much recycled paper as they like, find some sticky tape, scissors and a tape measure and build the tallest tower they could from their materials and measure it.

The titanic challenge involved students Using some common household materials to build a boat which not only floats, but also carries weight. They could use just about anything that will float and not get soggy as well as some sticky tape, string or glue to stick the boat parts together. For this, they needed to focus on design of the hull (the bit of the boat that sits in the water). They then were asked to Clear some space and build the best boat they could in 30 minutes being no bigger than 30cm long by 15 cm wide by 10 cm tall. They then had to collect some objects they could use as known weights to put in their boat to test how much weight it could take (e.g. coins, some metal spoons or a tin of tomatoes). After estimating how much weight the boats could carry before either capsizing of sinking they then had to test their boats and add weights to test how much weight their boat could carry.

Please enjoy looking at some of their amazing work!
