Term Three 2019

Dear Parents,

We have another huge term ahead of us! As usual there is plenty going on both within and beyond the classroom, and lots to look forward to.

Sport

The sporting component this term focuses on athletics, with both the House and District Carnivals taking place. The children will be practising their athletic skills on a regular basis in the lead up to the Athletics Carnivals. Students will also compete in a Year Six sport competition which will be organised by our House Captains

Congratulations to all our Winter Sports teams for their positive and fair-minded approach to all their matches. It is always fantastic to see Black Rock’s values upheld in all events outside of the school.

Special congratulations to the Boys Handball team who were undefeated and are the district champions and also to the Girls Soccer Team and AFL team who won all their games besides one. Great effort!

School Concert

The Theme for this years concert is video games. In Year Six we will be focusing on the board game/video game, Jumanji. Concert rehearsal is well underway and will continue throughout Term 3. Please speak to your child's classroom teacher if you are available to help with the preparation of costumes or props. We will have a meeting early in Term 3 to discuss all of our ideas.

Curriculum

The core curriculum for Term Three will focus upon the following:

Speaking and Listening

Students will complete activities that require listening to discussions, contributing their own ideas and responding to others. In class and at home students will work on their Reading Assignments, which they will present to their peers. They will also use rubrics to assess their own and others work.

Reading and Viewing

Through reciprocal reading, Literature Circles and independent activities students will explore their understanding of the language and features of different texts, develop comprehension skills and analyse and make judgement using evidence from

what they read.

Writing

This term students will write a variety of poetry including Haiku, Limerick, Song and Narrative. They will also write a detailed information report, becoming an expert on a specific topic.

Inquiry

Business & Economics and Design & Technology

During our Inquiry Unit this term, the Year Six students will be working on some practical units aimed at building their awareness and skills in these such important areas. In these units students will explore the importance of economic and financial decision making in everyday life. They will also critically examine technologies that are used regularly in the community and consider why and for whom technologies were developed.

Homework

This term a focus of our homework will be a reading assignment, to be set in week one, which includes an authors study and book reports on a range of text types. Other home tasks will include spelling activities, assigned individualised Mathletics tasks, as well as reading and writing activities.
