Junior School Report

As we enter into the final weeks of Term 1, we would like to congratulate students for a great start to the school year. It has been fantastic to see students immerse themselves into many of the extra- curricular activities, and actively engage in the learning opportunities here at Scoresby.

The final weeks of Term 1 will prove to be a busy time with parent / teacher / student conferences taking place on Thursday 25 March, and Year 8 students having the opportunity to meet with author Robert Newton.  It is important for students to continue to stay focused on their learning, and ensure that they continue to listen to teacher instructions and complete all tasks to the best of their ability.

Elevate Education

On Thursday 18 March, students in Years 7- 9 participated in a study skills session with Elevate Education. This session is aimed at providing students with tips and skills which are designed to support students in their studies throughout high school.  In particular, the Year 7 sessions focused on teaching students dynamic reading skills and effective note taking skills. The Year 8 program provided students with the understanding of how to prioritise tasks and create a study routine which will maximise their time whilst completing homework.  Finally, the Year 9 session introduced students to the learning technique of mnemonics and how they can be used to maximise understanding of content.

We encourage students to continue to apply these newfound skills within the classroom and at home, and engage in conversations with their parents / guardians about the techniques and how they can be used to improve their learning.

KIOSC Excursion

On Wednesday 10 March, the Year 9’s took a 25- minute walk to the Swinburne TAFE to learn more about food futures.  When we first arrived, we were introduced to the wonderful staff and were told to put our bags in lockers.  We were then told by staff about our main focus for the day and then we split up into home groups and did a number of activities.

The first activity that we did was measuring the amount of protein that was in each product and we recorded the data on an iPad.  Once we had finished the activity we did a comparison on what we ate throughout two days and then we compared with groups of what they ate as well.

Once we had finished our break we went into an experimental room where we had the option to eat a bug which was a cricket! Then we got to make a lollipop with a bug in it and at the end we took them home.

After lunch we went into a computer lab and used an app called ‘The Marvel App’ and created an advertisement to educate Primary and Secondary students about sources of protein and how much growing children need.

This was great experience, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our time at KIOSC.

Term 2 Reminders:

A reminder that in Term 2 students will be required to be in full winter uniform. We kindly ask for families to check this uniform before the commencement of the term to ensure that it aligns with our uniform policy (knee length skirt, plain grey socks, black lace up leather work- style shoes).

The holiday break is also a great opportunity for students to complete an inventory of their school materials (pens, paper, exercise books etc), and ensure to top up their supplies ready for Term 2.

Sheep Heart Dissection

Today in Science we had to dissect an Ovine heart, which also means sheep. We cut into the left and right ventricles and learnt that the left ventricle is stronger than the right as it has to pump blood into the whole body. We also looked at the left and right atria. We also looked around the heart strings (also known as Chordae Tendinea).

I really enjoyed it because we learnt what different parts of the heart are and what they do to keep us alive.

The Junior School would like to wish our students, parents / families and College community a safe and restful Easter break. We look forward to seeing our students return for an exciting and productive Term 2.
