Around the School

Kids & Echidnas

By Allen Dickson (Enrichment Co-ordinator)

One of the fabulous things about BHCS is just how connected we are to our local environment. Not only do we have a vibrant Enviro program, Cluckingham Palace, a veggie patch and our Monbulk Creek reserve, but we also have the occasional wild visitor.

Unlike the usual kids that cross the road, Mr Kenny had an e-kid-na friend on his crossing duty. This little prickly fellow stuck around for a second day at school and several Junior School classes had the chance to get a close view as he snuffled his way behind the staff room.

How fortunate are we to have visitors like these!

Every Day Deserves a Sunflower!

By Judy Woods (Senior Art Teacher)

No other flower radiates joy and happiness like the sunflower. With its elegant, buttery yellow and bronze rays and huge smiling face poised on the top of a giant stem, they are a crowd favourite. What better way to begin the new year than to adorn the walls of our reception area with sunflowers?

Shelby B (current Year 10 student) was commissioned by the Art department to create the painting pictured below. Using her own photograph as a reference, she was inspired by the distinct style, thick application of paint and use of complementary colours in the works of the Post-Impressionist, Van Gogh.

Shelby was drawn to Van Gogh’s ability to project emotion in his paintings and, given the challenges of the last 2 years, she wanted to project feelings of delight and positivity in her work.

Shelby demonstrated endurance and fortitude as the painting of this large work was interrupted a number of times due to the lockdowns.

This painting is currently brightening the walls of our reception area and will eventually be hung as a permanent display on the walls of the art room. Thank you, Shelby, for sharing your talents with our school community and for helping us start the year with such positive imagery.

Past Student Panel Visit Our Year 12 Students

By Chauntelle Wolfaardt (Careers Administrator)

On their first day back in school the Year 12 students welcomed a panel of past students who had come to share their stories. The stories were all encouraging, ranging from those who left school to go straight to university and those who began working after Year 12 or took a GAP year.

They spoke about the value of Year 12 and how the ATAR was not defining, that opportunities were made through networking and investigation and willingness to work and learn.

We also were reminded to balance the year with activities other than study to keep a healthy body and mind and to enjoy the final year in the school chapter.

Thanks so much to Danni, Tia, Hudson, Ben and Zac for taking time off and being happy to come back and share with us.
