LEARNING MATTERS

THE YEAR 9 URBAN PROJECT (9UP)

The Year 9s spent most of Term 1 completing their first compulsory BYTES module, namely the Year 9 Urban Project, otherwise known as 9UP.  This innovative program involves students forming small groups and investigating a current social issue.  The highlight of 9UP, however, is always the three days spent in the city during which student’s survey members of the public about their chosen topics.  This data, together with expert interviews, forms the basis for each group’s research and the hectic process of collecting, collating and analysing their results, ensures the students become experts in these areas.

2016 saw the Year 9s explore a broad range of contentious issues, such as the impact of gender stereotypes on society, the threat of terrorism in Australia, online piracy and gay marriage, amongst many others.  Their understanding of these topics, however, was on display for all to see during the final week of Term 1, when each group presented their research findings to an audience of their peers, parents and teachers.  As per usual, the BYTES teachers were impressed by the quality of these presentations.

9UP is a valuable program that not only challenges students, but helps them develop and refine key life skills.  To succeed, they must effectively collaborate and communicate, use ICT to interpret and present their data, and prepare an engaging yet informative performance outlining their research.  9UP also provides opportunities for students to build leadership qualities and learn more about the complexities of our ever-changing and highly diverse globalised world.  It was undoubtedly an enjoyable and memorable experience for the Year 9s.
