Targeted Maths Games

Numeracy is the ability to apply maths concepts in all areas of life. Numeracy skills involve understanding numbers, counting, solving number problems, measuring, sorting, noticing patterns, adding and subtracting numbers and so on. Many number skills can be learnt and practiced through Maths Games and these games also generate critical thinking. You can also google search or you tube Maths games for more ideas and instructional clips about how to play. Here are a couple of examples that you may be able to try at home...

 

Nim Master

Nim is a two player game. You start with a pile of counters. On your turn, remove one or two counters from the pile. You must take at least one token on your turn, but you may not take more than two. Whoever takes the last token is the winner. Play many times and discover and explore new strategies as you play.

 

1089: Instructions

•             Choose any 3 digit number e.g. 382

•             Write the digits biggest to smallest and smallest to biggest e.g. 832  238

•             Subtract the smaller number from the bigger e.g. 832 – 238

•             When you have your new number, reverse its digits and add these two numbers together   e.g. 594 + 495
