Houses/Interschool Sport Report
On Friday 27 April, 73 Koonung students competed at the Whitehorse Division Cross Country Competition at Ruffey Lake Park. In ideal running conditions, Koonung students excelled with 28 students qualifying for Region Finals on June 19.
Special mention to the following girls who came first in their respective age group races:
Katinka Schmid (13 Year Girls)
Anna Berrell (15 Year Girls)
Stella Burgess (16 Year Girls)
Good luck to all the students competing at Region.
Thanks to Mr Kimonides and Dr McKie for providing staff supervision on the day.
A big thank you also to the parents who helped with duties on the day:
Leigh Berrell, Jeremy Griffith and Edwina Ollerenshaw.
On Tuesday the 1 May, the following teams competed:
Senior Boys Baseball – Eastern Region Finals (Mr Sheehan)
Senior Boys AFL - Whitehorse Division (Mr Emerson)
Senior Boys Badminton – Whitehorse Division (Mr Dailey)
Koonung students demonstrated great teamwork and spirit but were not able to progress to the next stage in these competitions.
The House Athletics Carnival was scheduled for Friday the 4 May. As you would be aware by now, the decision was made on the morning of the event to cancel this competition. Constant rain overnight and in the morning as well as the predicted thunderstorms during the day were major factors considered in making this decision. In addition, the safety and comfort of staff and students was paramount. I visited the track in the morning and it was wet – events such as the Hurdles and High Jump were too dangerous to run. The heavy downpour of rain just after lunchtime vindicated this decision.
Thank you to all staff, students and parents for being so flexible, cooperative and understanding in relation to this matter. After much consultation, the rescheduled date for the House Athletics Carnival will now be Tuesday 17 July (second day back in Term 3). Fingers crossed the weather will be kind to us on this day! Note: Division Athletics is not until August 28.
On Monday 7 May, Mr Sanderson took 6 boys to the EMR Golf Competition at Eastwood Golf Course in Kilsyth. From all accounts, it was a very enjoyable event in windy conditions.
On Tuesday 8 May, it was the Year 9 and 10 students turn to compete in Division Competitions, namely:
Boys AFL (Mr Kofoed)
Boys Netball (Mr Dimattina)
Girls Netball (Ms Howe)
Koonung performed well in these competitions but were beaten by the strong Box Hill Senior SC teams on the day.
An important message relating to the Intermediate Girls AFL Whitehorse Division Competition on Friday 11 May
This event has been cancelled, due to the inclement weather forecast for the day. A rescheduled date will be announced soon.
Remember to refer to Compass News Feed on a regular basis to keep up-to-date with all matters relating to Interschool Sport. There are a number of competitions still to play in the remainder of this term. As we fast approach winter, I hope that the cold and wet weather does not cause too many disruptions to these competitions.

Senior Basketball
A wonderful day was held with 45 senior basketballers at Nunawading stadium on Tuesday 24 April.
Koonung had five teams, so many more than other participating schools.
Boys A played a total of five games winning against Box Hill High 44-33, Blackburn High 32-20, and East Doncaster 47-42. Losses occurred against Box Hill SSC Basketball Academy to both their first and second teams but were very competitive in both games. The boys were able to qualify for the final but again faced the might of Box Hill SSC. They fought hard the entire game playing some excellent team orientated basketball but unfortunately were not up to their level.
Girls A finished second overall, a great performance. They had a draw with Blackburn High but also had to face the very powerful Box Hill SSC.
Boys B games were fantastic to watch as they really enjoyed playing with each other and performed admirably with a win against Blackburn High, a one point loss in a thriller against East Doncaster, but were burnt out by their final game against Box Hill High having a loss.
Girls B games were also fun and enjoyable to watch. A large win against Blackburn High 32-12 but another one of the many teams to suffer against Box Hill SSC.
The Boys C team as you can expect did not have the same skill level as other Koonung teams but their effort, positive attitude and commitment were superb.
It is always inspiring to be able to go on 'out of school activities' to see how well Koonung students bond together, encourage and assist each other as well as complying with any request staff have without question, not to mention that they perform to their very best.
Special mention to two coaches, Conor Mathews and Mitchell Tsakaros whom were unable to play due to injury but coached boys teams on the day.

Senior Badminton report
Our Senior Boy’s Badminton A and B Teams played at the Melbourne Badminton Centre on Tuesday the 1 May against the other Whitehorse Zone schools. The A-Team had a hard fight against the other teams, which also included a national team player and many other state players. They unfortunately lost all their matches 0 games to 6 despite their hard work. The B-Team fared better winning all their 4 matches and only dropped 1 game. It was a great effort by all our players, Harald Caap, Ryan Guo, Dukdak Jigdak, Darren Lim, Jason Wang, Joshua Wheeler and Miles Wirawan. Thank you for your effort and sportsmanship while representing Koonung.
